How pleasant it is to hear some of those pieces which may not have been played since the 1930s! Although they're not all masterpieces, the works contained on this disc are full of charm and remind the listener of an important era. It was at the time these pieces were written that duets of the great orchestral works (such as the Beethoven Symphonies) were being played, there was an increase in the piano industry, and many English households were 'musical' because certainly most middle class and quite a few working class families had pianos. Not so today, unfortunately!
Philip Martin is a pianist who can bring joy to the listener in any piece. In all the works there is sparkle, brought about by beautiful singing tone and fine phrasing. I particularly enjoyed his playing in the Paradies Toccata, the Paderewski Minuet and the Raff 'La Fileuse'. I would recommend this disc to anyone with an interest in Victorian culture, or just in pianoforte playing in general, because it is rare to find such simple pieces played with such distinction.
