I bought this disc on an impulse and now I am seeking out the rest of John Luther Adams' work. The music is peaceful and evocative of the sound when snow covers everything. I doubt if anyone would sit and concentrate hard on this work because it flows over you almost without you noticing although I have done so and it was very rewarding. The word ambient is now much misused but this work could be something played at a lower than usual volume letting it fill the spaces that only this sort of "quiet music" can.

I usually put this on repeat and recharge my batteries to it. I love it.

This is essentially ambient background music but still very rigorous and beautiful. if you like the adverserial combate of the traditional symphony then this is the complete opposite but there's room in the world for both. does it really evoke the frozen wastes of Alaska to me? I'm not so sure but it is very hypnotic and calming music and there's no need to conjour up picture sin your mind to make it work.
