Amazon.co.uk Review

The 18th century, with its frills and bawds, was ideal territory for the Carry On team: Carry On Dick is one of the few of the series where one notices the quality of the art direction in intervals between terrible old Talbot Rothwell jokes and the creaking of standard farce moments. Captain Fancy (Kenneth Williams) is sent to the remote village of Upper Denture to arrest Big Dick Turpin (Sid James) and makes the mistake of confiding in the local Rector, the Reverend Flasher (who is Big Dick's secret alter ego). Dick has troubles of his own: his liaison with his housemaid and henchperson Harriet (Barbara Windsor) is perpetually interrupted by his amorous housekeeper (Hattie Jacques). Meanwhile, Joan Sims struts around the plot as the proprietor of a touring show of scantily clad young women. This is not one of the best of the series--a certain mean-spiritedness creeps in to the humour as does the self-conscious awareness that 1974 was a date a little late for some of the more sexist jokes--but any film with Kenneth Williams discussing satin coats with his tailor has something going for it. --Roz Kaveney

4.0 out of 5 stars THE LAST OF THE REALLY GREAT CARRY ON'S, 8 Jan 2001
By ianphillips@uk.dreamcast.com (BOLTON, LANCASHIRE, ENGLAND) - See all my reviews
One of the last triumphs in the series. Many critics say the series always scored best when re working a piece of history into comedy. They could well be right!

The notorious highway man Dick Turpin is cleverly disguised as the Reverend of a church in a quiet village. However the Bow Street Runners led by Captain Desmond Fancey (KENNETH WILLIAMS) are dertermined to bring his reign to an end.

Less action than usual but the scripts do hold many laughs despite being yet again over stuffed with double entrendres. The cast are all looking a bit older now but are as loveable as ever and all play there parts professionally with particular good players being SID JAMES, BARBARA WINDSOR, KENNETH WILLIAMS and PETER BUTTERWORTH> JOAN SIMS is of good value too as the saucy Madame Desiree who's delightfully plummy French acent slides occasionally into a broad cockney accent. Great stuff! HATTIE JAQUES is very good too as is BERNARD BRESSLAW but JAQUES, BRESSLAW and SIMS are given very limited screen time. Still their contributions are effective and totally essential.

This was a sad end to the golden era. It was SID JAMES, BARBARA WINDSOR and HATTIE JAQUES final apperances in a Carry On film. The series went into rapid decline afterwards (although 1975's BEHIND was good even though it bombed at the box office) and the gap has never been filled and most probably never will! ...A good, old fashioned comedy that will raise a smile to any fan even if the jokes are cruder and smuttier than usual.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the last good ones, 25 Nov 2003
Carry on Dick, 1974, marked the end of the truly great carry ons as many of the regualrs left the series fir various reasons. This was the last carry on for babs, sid james and hattie jaques. As with all carry on films there is a quite basic plot: Sid, peter butterworth and babs run a church, but also rob highwaymen on the side ad stash their loot, for later, sale, in the church. Their house keeper ( who doesnt know this)thinks sids a genuine vicar, this sets up for comedy throughout the film as hattie gradulally realises somethings up. Kenny connor, kenny williams and (in an excellent role) jack douglas are the bumbling cops that try to get catch them, headed by big berny breslaw. Eventualy the cops find out its sid etc... this really is one great carry on film. Jack douglas especially is my favourite in this one, although, as ever, all of the cast do a really good job. the jokes are quite low quality (talbot must have been running out of steam), but this is the last great carry, makred particualrly by the last appearance of the three great actors mentioned above. I would STRONGLY recommend anyone buy this

5.0 out of 5 stars Timless fun from the carry on team yet again a gem, 13 Jan 2001
This title is one of my favorites because they have picked a folk law story in our history in the uk and make of it a brillient and very funny carry on film that will pick you up when you are feeling down or just fed up with it all. This film has the very young Barbara windsor staring with Mr Sid James a must for any collection
