Product Description

Manufacturer's Description
The right operating system for home users who meanly want to write documents, access the internet, email people, play some games and listen to music. Designed also for newcomers to Linux.

Set-up and Installation:
A new and improved installation process now enables network access to be configured before any peripherals are connected or any users are set up. Even before logging in for the first time, the system offers to make a connection to the FTP server to search for and install any software updates. During operation, once connected to the FTP-Server, a search commences for all available updates. The user will be informed about these and asked if the updates are to be implemented. The user can choose from a range of package options and can select individual packages - he is no longer restricted to choosing a complete CD image from the available installation sources.

Graphical User Environment.
KDE 3.1:
The newly improved version of the K Desktop Environment with numerous feature enhancements that facilitate better usability. These include VNC (Virtual Network Computing) functionality. This offers the ability to access remotely the graphical desktop of machines on the network which have given permission for this access. Controlled remote access greatly improves efficiency when maintaining a larger network that may include systems in remote locations. This KDE feature is known as the "Desktop Sharing Framework". The KDE organiser tool, KOrganizer, is now MS-Exchange compatible.

GNOME 2.2:
The new enhanced version of GNOME has been adapted to KDE so that now KDE menus can also be used with GNOME. Additional improvements include better font handling and panel design. A new window manager, called Metacity, has been added.

Office suite
OpenOffice.org 1.0.2.: the latest version of the office suite which has seen improvements in installation design and stability. SuSE Linux 8.2 includes a "quick-starter" which enables the office modules to be loaded far more quickly than before. In addition, a range of useful templates are included, which are exclusive to this distribution.

Network and Internet
ISDN-functions have been expanded. It is now very easy to send faxes via ISDN using a new module in the YaST systems administration tool, which enables the simple installation and operation of the "kdeprintfax" tool. Another YaST module enables the set up of answering machines for ISDN connections. The recorded messages are stored as sound files and the user is then informed via e-mail of their messages.

Graphics
The scanning programme Kooka now has more enhanced hand-written text recognition functionality. A dictionary has been added to facilitate the checking of words recognised by the system.

4.0 out of 5 stars SuSE Linux - By The Experts, 24 April 2003
By A Customer
I have only ever used RedHat before and found serious problems with it, so I was nervous regarding this system and how it would install and run. The guide that came with the OS was very informative and I repartitioned Windows following the book. I tried this with RedHat and failed miserably ... I setup my own partition table for SuSE with the help of the user manual.
I must admit, I do find the over indulgence of tools daunting but the system configurator is good and everything I would expect is here but it is the wealth of tools and usability that I find remarkable. With Windows, you get an immense level of control but you never have to configure your system. With linux, you get control, the tools and, yes, you have to configure your system. This is fun though, and not a hassle as I found that getting 'my hands dirty' with my machine too pleasurable.
I use broadband and found no issues there. There was an automatic update utility that updated the system without me having to configure any connection. In fact, I did not have to configure my connection at all. This did it all for me, even linking two machines, peer to peer (just a wire connection through 2 network cards). I can share utilites too as with Windows but I like the remote desktop utility I get.
Having to configure the system can be annoying, if not daunting but i find this level of control superior to Windows, put it this way, most tools are known as RPM's which load for you, otherwise you have to load the programe yourself but do it once, you can do it a million times. And yes, I uninstalled an RPM.
I can watch DVD's and do everything I did with Windows but with no crashes and I have control of my own PC. The games I get are better too but let's face it, commercial games won't play on Linux but that is what my PS2 is for. This is for writing, studying and working with. I recommend this instead of RedHat - I know RedHat did have problems from RedHat 6.X through to 8.0 so i can't trust 9.0. SuSE 8.2 has not given me problems. What more can I say?

5.0 out of 5 stars Great value and easy to install, 22 April 2003

This represents amazing value if you are looking for a system that will deal with office tasks, media and graphics plus lots of add-ons.Open Office which is installed with this must be one of tbe best pieces of free software ever released.
I previously used Suse 7.2 and this installed easier and much quicker recognising printer, scanner and soundcard straight away.
If you have Windows XP you may need some other partitioning software to install this. However,Suse is a good version to try if you are new to Linux and continues to grow with new applications at a fast pace.

5.0 out of 5 stars SuSE 8.2 review, 28 Jul 2003
By A Customer
Having fought with various distributions of Linux finally we have a product that is begining to rival Windows.

SuSE 8.2 is a dream to install and looks every bit as good as XP on the desktop.

Unlike other Linux distributions SuSE comes with a host of easy to use configuration tools just like the Windows control panel.

An ideal start if you are looking to wean yourself away from Mr Gates!

(ps I don't work for SuSE, honest!)
