Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Matthew Herbert is that rara avis in dance music: a producer capable of having great ideas and concepts and putting them into action effectively. Goodbye Swingtime follows on from his recent Bodily Functions album and anti-corporate Radioboy project, he returns with an album that combines the sound of Big Band jazz with some deep political statements. The musical framework of the album was arranged by Peter Wraight and recorded by an accomplished team of British jazz players (at Abbey Road), then handed to Matthew for some serious electronic restructuring. Although a decidedly ambitious project--the music within often veers closer to orchestral jazz than "big band" in places--the results are nonetheless mesmerising.

An array of vocalists (including Jamie Lidell, Mara Carlyle and Arto Lindsay) help breathe extra emotion into the songs, complimenting the gentle strings and rhythmic swings and riding Herbert's detailed and inventive studio trickery. Great music that's actually saying something; this is one of the most original and interesting albums you'll hear this year. --Paul Sullivan

5.0 out of 5 stars Herbet Jazzes out with his mates, 11 Jun 2003
Anyone who liked Herberts last album "Bodily Functions" is bound to enjoy this, there is certainly less emphasis on the electronic, but this has given him the scope to expand the jazzy/big band sound, and it's done to fantastic effect here. We have vocal stylings from the legendary New Yorker Arto Lindsay and honey toungued vixen Dani Siciliano amongst others. To accompany this there are 5 sax, 4 trombones, 4 trumpets, drums, piano and bass (ripped by dave Green.. get your dbfb banging for this).. The result is ten of the best jazz/electronic crossover tracks to appear for a while. Interesting too is that the album is made accrding to the rules of PCCOM.. which have been drawn up by Matthew and could become to music what Dogma is to cinema.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hype? If there is any..believe., 17 Sep 2003
By A Customer
This is a jazz album, by a medium sized band (not exactly a typical big band sound) and some fine vocalists. The electronic aspect, which I think many people expect (and some apparently seem to miss), comes in the form of the delicious and often very subtle twisting, layering and distorting of the band's sound.

The result is a beautifully composed piece of (often vocally accompanied) jazz that has a dynamic quality you just couldn't get from a straight recording of a jazz band.

If you really don't like jazz, you will obviously struggle to enjoy this album. However, if you have any appreciation of music, this is absolutely one of the more important albums to come from one of the finest musicians working at the moment. It is truly a cliched 'must buy', and I rarely say that.

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't believe the hype, 28 Jul 2003
I bought Goodbye Swingtime on the strength of Herberts other albums particularly Bodily Functions. This album is a quality recording with quality musicians but is too self-indulgent and lacks any sort of hook. It just doesn't grab you.
