4.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful album, 23 May 2003
By S. Tattersall "stu_twisted" (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
If you think that Ms Willcox just screams (as my friends do!) then listen to this. It is a reworking of shakespeare and is beautifully recorded with layered vocals and music. One of the problems with Toyahs music is that as a thirty something her albums are difficult to play when chilling with friends, as often her vocals are intrusive. So i tend to listen to her when alone. This album surpasses all that. It is hauntingly beautiful, has a terribly grown up feel about it and comes over as harmonious and tuneful - a superlative work. 'The Shamen Says' is a great tune as are the others, they evoke thought and mood and are great to listen to intently or to play in the background when you are doing something else. I am happy she recorded this, it is neither eighties throwback stuff nor cliched rock, it stands alone. Buy it...and be wonderfully surprised.

5.0 out of 5 stars Toyah enters the realms of Prog Rock, 22 Feb 2004
Musically and lyrically this album is the close cousin of the other Toyah/Fripp collaboration, Sunday All Over the World. While the latter is definitely the brainchild of Fripp and his soon to be pals in King Crimson, Ophelia's Shadow seems to be the perfect marriage of Toyah's Pop Opera style and Fripp's Soundscapes. The pop sensibilities mellow the Proggish nature of Fripp and result in a wonderfully accessible collection of songs. Toyah delivers some of her most interesting Post Punk lyrics to date.

2.0 out of 5 stars Huge disappointment, 26 Jan 2006
By Brida "izumi" (Worcs) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
I bought this album after it was recommended to me through Amazon based on past purchases. Although I haven't really heard Toyah's music, I had high expectations for the album as I find her a really interesting woman. I thought her lyrics would be fantastic - much like Tori Amos, my favourite artist, who is also a really interesting character. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with OPHELIA'S SHADOW.
For me the music and the lyrics were poor. Nothing really got into my head and stayed there. In fact one of the first reasctions to her lyrics was that they just don't make much sense - there seems no progression of the theme. For example, the CD sleeve has Toyah's thoughts on the album where she discusses some of the songs and their themes. She says that Take What You Will is about how most men feel that they own their women lock, stock and barrel. This sounds as though it should be a fantastic song - a theme worthy of a Tori Amos album - yet the lyrics just don't measure up. I'm sorry to say but there just isn't the intelligence there.
I really tried with this album, almost willing myself to like it. But comparing it to Amos, there is no comparison. I come away from the CD and instantly forget the lyrics or the meldoy, and it doens't stir up any emotions in me at all.

I'm sorry, but for me this is not great musical talent. Having said that, I think Toyah is a fantastic woman - clever, interesting and someone who is in touch with herself - it just doesn't show on this piece.
