Amazon.co.uk Review

First broadcast in 1993, NYPD Blue was created by Steven Bochco and David Milch, the team responsible for the magnificent, mould-breaking Hill Street Blues, which had featured both of NYPD's principal stars, David Caruso (Detective John Kelly) and Dennis Franz (Detective Andy Sipowicz). Here, their partnership takes up most of the screen time, a break from the ensemble feel of the earlier show (though he's the boss, James McDaniel's Lieutenant Fancy, for instance, is a peripheral figure). But there are familiar Bochco themes. Tough-but-put-upon cops struggle with their own problems as well as the criminal element: Kelly is going through a divorce, while Sipowicz is fighting alcoholism, though these are as nothing compared with officer Janice Licalsi's dramatic means of escaping her involvement with the Mob.

Although fast-cut and street-sharp, NYPD Blue arguably betrays a right-wing bias: the villains are invariably irredeemable scum, too often let off the hook by a slack and excessively liberal judiciary, with victims of crime often forced to take desperate measures of their own. The fate of one 4B (a young David Schwimmer), however, acts as a warning against vigilantism. Unleavened by much of Hill Street's humour and with plots more designed to keep the pulse racing than reflect social realism, NYPD Blue is simmering, downbeat, compelling viewing that edged mainstream American TV nearer to the knuckle than it had previously dared to venture.

On the DVD: NYPD Blue, Series 1 has a number of special features, including a making-of documentary in which creator Steven Bochco explains the lengthy negotiations he had to undertake with the network in order to get the show aired in anything like its original form. "Cast Blotters" is a feature about the characters and players. There's also a short piece on the love interest in NYPD Blue and biographies of the cast and programme makers. --David Stubbs

5.0 out of 5 stars NYPD Blue season 1, 4 Sep 2004
This a terrific beginning to a brilliant show which has spawned 9 other great seasons of it. It shows the lives of tough street cops and how their jobs has affected their personal relationships. starring great actors David Caruso as Det.John Kelly and Dennis Franz as Det.Andy Sipowitz. Other terrific performances from Amy Brennerman and Sherry Stringfield, and if you look closely you will see a pre-Friends David Schwimmer.
A tough detective series like you have never seen before which will keep you wanting to watch more. My recommendation. Buy it!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars BUYERS OF THIS SET BEWARE!, 9 Jun 2004
NYPD Blue is most likely the greatest police drama ever to come out of the U.S. It is an absolutely fantastic show and is still great in its 11th season! However, buyers of this set beware. Fox have stated that due to poor sales of the first two seasons, no further seasons of NYPD Blue will be released on DVD, and as a person who intended to buy the entire series as a collection, like many others, can no longer do so. So, I just want to say that the show itself is great, and having the first 2 seasons on DVD is fantastic, but fans of the show like myself who wanted to own the entire collection, won't be able to, so for most, its not worth buying the first 2 seasons at all, as you'll just have an incomplete set. Funny how FOX have neglected to make this easily available public knowledge isn't it?

5.0 out of 5 stars i waited a long time for this............, 9 Jun 2003
By marc burns (England) - See all my reviews
For true fans of this show this collection is a must. NYPD blue has long been my favorite show on the tv and to be able to sit down and watch the whole first series in one hit was great. All the emotion, comedy and realism takes hold of you from the moment it starts to play and does'nt let you go till the end of the very last episode. The added extras contained on the discs give a wonderfull insight into the making of the first series. It really is a great piece of television. You should buy it!!!! I only hope it wont take as long before they release the rest of this wonderfull programme on DVD.
