Amazon.co.uk Review

As the fourth series of Angel starts, everything is still as we left it: Angel has been sunk to the bottom of the sea in an iron box by his inexplicable and vindictive son Connor and Cordelia has been summoned to higher realms to await orders. Gunn and Fred are left in the Hyperion Hotel, unsure about what has happened to their friends, and Lilah is working hard to seduce Wesley to the dark side. In the first few episodes, some of this is resolved but it's almost immediately replaced by far worse crises: prophesies of doom accumulate more rapidly even than usual in this wonderfully gloomy show and a horned rock-like Beast rains fire on Los Angeles. This last year is Angel's most tightly dramatic season yet--with a story arc of surprising intensity punctuated by the show's usual wit and sexiness.

On the DVD: Angel, Series 4 is presented on disc in Dolby 2.0 Surround Sound with a visual aspect ratio of 16:9. It comes with insightful, and often hilarious, commentaries on seven of the 22 episodes as well as featurettes--a series overview, profiles of the characters of Jasmine and the Beast, a farewell to the Hyperion Hotel (the characters' base for three seasons) and a discussion of the apocalypse that Angel has to deal with from episode seven onwards). It has subtitles in English, French, Dutch, Danish, Finnish, Norwegian and Swedish and has the option of the soundtrack dubbed into French. --Roz Kaveney

4.0 out of 5 stars Arguably the best fantasy programming in ages, 14 Mar 2004
By Sheridan Seraphin (London, England) - See all my reviews
I'm gonna do what most posters haven't done..is actually review the DVDs content.

Right, lets start with the actual feature...or features, which evers best. I personally really liked Angel season 4. I felt the show stepped it up a level in terms of action and special effects. There were times where I actually forgot that I was watching a TV Show and not some big John Woo blockbuster movie. Apocolypse Nowish is a great example of just how fantastic the special effects are.

Compared to the last 2 seasons, the main story arc for season 4 seems to rely on lots of twist and turns to keep the viewer interested, which is fine by my standards. The character developments continue to be intriguing. Every character goes through changes, whether they be good or bad. This, I believe makes it more interesting for the more dramatic moments in the season. We also get to see the return of the Evil Angelus (Angel's alter ego). If you guys saw Buffy season 2 then you know all about this character. Boreanaz seems to do a better job with Angelus than he does with his Angel character, and he has much more fun in doing so.

I'd say the highlights of the season is the whole Angelus/Faith arc, which combines some fantastic dramatic performances and awesome fight scenes.

Now, onto the extras. Finally, and I say this like the Rock - FINALLY, ANGEL HAS SOME DECENT EXTRAS! The extras on these discs are far more superior than the extras on the previous season. The featurettes are fairly decent, but it's the commentaries that steal the show as far as extras are concerned. For the first time on Angel DVDs, we get actor commentaries from Alexis Denisof (Wesley) and Andy Hallet (Lorne). These guys are really great in their respective commentaries. There are 7 Commentaries to listen to! So i'd say don't do it whilst you've got homework.

Picture quality is as great as ever. It's anamorphic and theres hardly any grain on any of the episodes. That's it really. Slightly better than season 3's transfer.

Sound: Now this is what really gets my nickers in a twist. This show is full of sound. Without sound, this show really wouldn't be as great as it is...so why in the blue hell do we only get a 2.1 Surround mix?! It's not like it's difficult to mix it into 5.1. I could easily have been done, which makes me believe that Fox aren't that found of Buffy or Angel. I mean, 24 got a 5.1 mix straight away for season 2! It's quite a shame. However, for a 2.1 track it's decent. It's the best you'll ever hear, that's for damn sure.

Well, what are you waiting for, man! Buy ASAP

5.0 out of 5 stars Best ever!!!!, 13 Jul 2003
I think this season of Angel was by far the best season Angel has ever had. In fact, I am also a Buffy fan and I think this season of Angel was better than most of the Buffy seasons as well.
This season picks up where season 3 left off - Angel is rescued from the ocean by a dark, broody Wesley, Connor is told to basically f***k off, Lorne is rescued from Las Vegas, and Cordelia returns from the higher dimension...a VERY...different woman.
This doesn't really have any special stand-alone episodes, it's all one huge storyline running all the way through, so if you like your "moster of the week" type episodes then this isn't the season for you. The season is packed with big bads, starting with the huge unbeatable demon called The Beast, which is made out of rock. After The Beast is defeated Angelus is back! He escapes and goes on a killing spree and Wesley tracks down the only person who can stop him...Faith, The Vampire Slayer! The next villain is a big surprise and I won't tell you who it is...let's just say it's someone we know and love! And finally the season ends in a 4 part arc with a beautiful (yet evil) ebony goddess called Jasmine who enslaves all of LA while she devours them one by one.
The season finale is not as action packed or Climatic as other season finales, but it is certainly an outstanding episode.
The best episodes to watch are "Spin The Bottle" where the gang loses their memories and become teenages again (we get to see high school Cordy and Watcher Wesley!), "Cavalry" where we get a big surprise villain and a surprise death to go with it, "Orpheus" where a Buffy character comes back to help the Angel gang, and "Peace Out", Connor's only decent episode where he saves the world.
So this season has it all, romance, scares, laughs, action, and LOTS of twists. Each episode keeps you guessing what's gonna happen next. This season sees every character having their darkest experiences yet, and we get to see lots of old characters such as Faith and Angelus, as well as lots of new characters such as Gwen and Jasmine. It also has surpsie deaths of quite a few characters we know and love!
So believe me...if you're an Angel fan you must BUY this boxset, this is what the series has been building up to for the past 3 seasons, a hugely climactic season where you won't have any time to get your breath back. Outstanding.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favourite Angel season so far, 2 Mar 2004
By A Customer
Season 4 is very different from previous Angel seasons. There aren't any real stand-alone episodes this time around, it's a bit like watching a very long (and very well-made) film.
The crew have outdone themselves this time around with fantastic make-up, props and special effects. The atmosphere of the sets and the lighting are better than ever before.

I don't want to say much about the story for people who haven't seen it. I watched the season without reading any spoilers and I was constantly surprised and amazed by the turn of events. The storyline is excellent and very deep. It raises philosophical and religious questions towards the end while remaining fun to watch.
The last episode mirrors the opening one in a very surprising ending. There was a lot of controversy amongst Angel fans about the ending when it first aired. However, looking back it makes perfect sense.

The regular cast were all great throughout but it's the guest star Gina Torres who shone as the best villain ever on Angel with brilliant acting. The excellent Eliza Dushku made a comeback as Faith, Alyson Hannigan guest starred as Willow and the story was somewhat linked to events in Buffy Season 7.

I would recommend Angel Season 4 to anyone, even people not familiar with Joss Whedon's universe will find something to hold their interest.
