Synopsis

Legendary director Jess Franco, perhaps best known for VAMPYROS LESBOS, takes us into a world of pain, drugs, murder, and sadomasochism in this controversial exploration of sexual extremes. A paradise island is the idyllic setting where the innocent Eugenie (Marie Liljedahl) undergoes her extreme sexual initiation at the hands of Dolmance, played by Christopher Lee. Based on the writings of the Marquis de Sade, this is a trip into sexual discovery that you won't forget.

4.0 out of 5 stars Miranda Bares Her Soul (among other things), 15 May 2006
By Johnny Guitar (London Uk) - See all my reviews
By way of the usual suspects (de Sade, Nietzsche, Mishima) creepy middle-aged writer Raedek (Paul Muller) argues that life is only lived in moments of extreme passion linked to sex & death. He grooms his stepdaughter Eugenie (Soledad Miranda) to act out the erotic murder of random women, which he photographs & films. The couple's descent into the abyss is witnessed by a fellow writer (Jess Franco) and the film is cleverly framed by Soledad's deathbed confession to Franco. Eugenie de Sade should not be confused with the earlier Eugenie: Her Journey into Perversion. That was pure 60s garish delirium while this is entering into downbeat 1970s sleaze territory. This Eugenie also lacks the glossy kitsch fun & games of the other two films in Franco's Soledad Miranda trilogy (Vampyros Lesbos & She Killed in Ecstasy). Eugenie de Sade is actually a rather disturbing film, a bit Hitchcockian & also comparable with Powell's Peeping Tom. The low budget sleaze factor gives an undeniable immediacy and intensity to certain scenes, of a kind David Lynch could never reach with his designer-perversity for yuppies. Relatively well scripted & made for the genre and acted with commitment (especially by Miranda of course), Eugenie de Sade is definitely recommended to those who like cinema from the other side of the tracks.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Vision Of Beauty, 15 Feb 2004
I came upon this film quite by accident, and it blew me away with Soledad Miranda's pure seductive beauty. Under Franco's direction, she just seduces the camera in every scene.
The material is very dark, but not graphic, a masterpiece of erotic horror.
The editing and effects are far from great, but worth the watch, if only to witness one of the most beautiful women this world will ever see. A star in the making who tragically died a few years after this film was made.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Woman is a goddess, 28 April 2003
In many ways this is a peculiar and disturbing film. Its underlying theme is one of gratuitous murder set amidst an incestuous relationship. Yet it is done with tact and great sensuality.

Above all there is Soledad Miranda. This woman is simply awesome-and has a screen presence that dominates what might otherwise be less impressive Eurocine fare. I have never seen anyone with such a complex sexual radiance- and she carries the whole film on her shoulders. Yes, she IS a goddess, who tragically died shortly before she was about to become a star.

So definitely worth buying. Never boring, sometimes troubling but always stimulating. Do not confuse with Franco's other (and equally terrific) "Eugenie, her Journey into Peversion".

I struggled to watch this awful rubbish to the end. The camera-work is sub-amateurish, the editing as smooth as a rasp and the music intrusive and disjointed. Read more

This is a curious but fascinating film, no doubt very much like its literary source. The plot is this: A daughter (Soledad Miranda) and her stepfather (Paul Muller) go on a murder... Read more
