Things have come to a sorry pass indeed if this is the best list of songs that the compilers of this mediocre CD could think of to represent the best of British music of the past 40 years or so. There are a few great tracks on here - you can never hear 'Waterloo Sunset' too many times, 'Senses Working Overtime' is always welcome and the musicianship on 'Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick' boggles the mind. But, T'Pau should surely remain firmly in the 'where are they now' file, it's about time 'Tubular Bells' and Duran Duran's entire output were consigned forever to the cultural refuse dump and no-one in the world needs to hear 'In the Air Tonight' ever again, ever. Some of the other tracks are barely representative of the best output of the performers - although it's a fine song, 'Golden Brown' hardly compares to 'No More Heroes' as a Stranglers 'legend'. Quite a lot of the rest is, frankly, filler that has appeared on too many other compilations to hold the listener's attention for long - I suppose familiarity breeds contempt.

Of course, everyone knows that the Beatles never appear on compilations (although the compilers try to get around this a bit by including 'Live and Let Die' and 'Imagine'), but it's disappointing that other huge names like the Rolling Stones, Oasis or Led Zeppelin are not represented here, never mind the hundreds of other artists whose work deserves the term 'legend' far more than Shirley Bassey, the Pet Shop Boys or the duller-than-dull Stereophonics. This is dinner-party background music for people who are too old or dull to like music any more.
