5.0 out of 5 stars What do you get? Everything!, 10 Aug 2005

Well, where do I start? Inventory is a gorgeous 14 CD box set containing all of the Buzzcocks' singles from 1977's seminal Spiral Scratch to the last single from the original lineup, What Do You Know? Also thrown in for good measure if the US only single of I Believe, in its original edited form. The sleeve for this is stunning and for me, well worth the price of the set alone.

The great thing about this set rather than the standard "best of's" that get released is that you get a mini version of each single to look at, complete with original sleeve design. There was much more to the Buzzcocks than just their records, their sleeves were also an integral part of their image. Malcolm Garrett did the Lads proud too, as his sleeve designs are superb. Take a look at the sleeves to Love You More, Harmony In My Head, Ever Fallen In Love, etc and you'll begin to realise that this stuff could be hung on your wall as well as placed on your turntable.

What about the songs? No one did power-pop romance as good as the Buzzcocks. In fact, no one else did power-pop romance. There were always two sides to the bands music, Shelley's Mills & Boon novellas and Diggle's intense Ulysses monologues. They had different styles, but both complemented each other perfect. Take one of them away and the Buzzcocks sound would have disintegrated.

Highlights are the hit singles Ever Fallen In Love, Promises, Everybody's Happy Nowadays and Harmony In My Head, but of course there's a lot more to discover, such as the heartrending Love You More and the under rated I Don't Mind.

Maybe this set is only for completists as you could buy all these tracks for less than half the price on other compilations, but this set is just so special due to the inclusion of the sleeves.

Angular images indeed.

4.0 out of 5 stars sleeve designs are not perfect replicas of the originals, 31 May 2009
By Modern 62 (Portugal) - See all my reviews
This is a complete singles box, from Buzzcocks perfect pop singles collection.
It deserves 5 stars for the brilliance of music.
But there are some imperfections with this box: perhaps because of legal rights the UA of "united artists label" is omitted except on the sleeve design of the cd single "I Don't Mind", and in some cover designs from the original 7" it was placed has part of the art;
the major difference from the originals is that the photographs of the last three singles had paintings over the images(for example, the shirts of the band on the 7" "Strange Things" are painted yellow), and the images of the cd singles are clean.
ok, but this better than nothing!...
