Product Description

CD Description

These haunting, hypnotic pieces of virtuoso performances byGhazal are based on Indian and Persian traditional music, and beautifully demonstrate the full potential of kamancheh and sitar. At times, it is hard to believe these three songs are improvised, such is the strength of the trio's understanding of each other's musical instincts. These players reap as much from the instruments as they can, frequently turning out sounds that mimic many other instruments, including gypsy violin, flute, and bassoon. Shujaat Husain Khan (who is descended from seven generations of musical masters) captures the sound of both the human voice and the natural environment, exemplified by conversation near a snapping, crackling blaze in "Fire". In addition to his sitar playing, Khan occasionally contributes mellow, buttery vocals that seamlessly blend in with the other instruments.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fusion of cultures that is well worth revisiting, 3 Sep 2003
By N. A. Bakhshov "nadimbakhshov" - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Ghazal 'The Rain' is a fusion group of Indian and Persian Music.

Classically, Indian rags tend to go from slow to fast, building up faster and more complex improvised patterns. This music pretty much follows the same structure but the presence of a Persian musician and instrument means that we are pulled back from Indian per se into an ancient fusion music that perhaps is best described as the flip side of the Arabic-Spanish stretch of the Islamic Empire circa 1300.

It is wonderfully lyrical and catchy. Persia was responsible for a profound cultural flowering in ancient Islamic culture. It is like a Spain of the East. Musically, you sense its presence in the lyricism and modality of the music.

It bears repeated listening and, under the aegis of ECM, deserves the wider audience. Those who seek to fuse the oud with Spanish Flamenco (Juan Martin, Radio Tarifa) are seeking out the same parallels and histories that this album taps into on the Eastern side of Arabia.

Thoroughly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful synthesis of musical traditions, 26 Mar 2005
By Budge Burgess (Kilmarnock, Scotland) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
This is a wonderful synthesis of traditions. From its opening ... slow, atmospheric, carrying you to some sublimely tranquil, contemplative place ... you can imagine watching the rainwaters caressing the greenery of your garden as you sit and absorb the slow but irresistible pace of life. This is mood music - intense, evocative, capable of carrying you off to some imagined place ... just close your eyes, go there, escape.

The instruments range through melodic and rhythmic palettes, painting colours and images, and then the voice enters with such grace and restraint, it makes you highly conscious of melodrama and self-importance of so many Western singers. This is minimalist music - it is stripped back to honesty, without the glitz and hype of the pop world - it is music which has an essential narrative quality even if the musical styles and language are wholly alien to you.

The three tracks rise in intensity, but you are always conscious of the immediacy of the playing, of the sustained musicianship, traditional, yet irreverent in places, not afraid to venture into new territory. It's music for creative relaxation, for sitting back and allowing the sounds to transport you wherever thou wouldst go ... music with humanity and passion, culminating in the buoyancy of the final track where the swirling rhythms spin you into life and energise you for a return to a more mundane world.

Excellent, excellent!
