5.0 out of 5 stars Dear John... A Cult '80s Classic!, 2 Aug 2006
By hamster-girl "Jeanie-Lou" (West Midlands, UK) - See all my reviews
Dear John... A cult '80s classic! Ralph Bates played to perfection John Lacey, a language teacher and permanantly harrassed and bewildered divorcee who was forever trying to work out where his marriage had gone wrong, why his wife Wendy had left him for his best mate Mike and why the judge had seen fit to award her the house, the car and, well, just about everything! John would seek refuge once a week down at the local 1-2-1 lonely-hearts club, a meeting place for divorcees wanting advice, a cuppa and a chat. Now a reluctant John's life had been plunged into a world of discos down at the Community Centre, gala nights, barbecues and wine and nibbles parties along with a host of other mismatched divorcees who for one reason or another had found themselves in exactly the same position as himself. This was at times a bittersweet and emotional comedy but at the same time it was absolutely hilarious! The real strength of the show came from the supporting characters. These included man-mad leader of the group Louise, supremely confident medallion-man (and self-procclaimed super-spy!) Kirk, gawky Ralph (with his motor-cycle combination!) sensitive, 3-times wed Kate, nervous giggler Sylvia and emotional-eater Mrs Arnott (who never took her hat off!) Other characters featured were John's Polish landlady Mrs Lamenski who was a constant thorn in his side, his mate and work colleague Ken whose own marriage to Maggie was on distinctly shakey ground and his young son Toby who had reached the age where he was beginning to ask increasingly awkward questions. All were pure caricatures but there was an earthy, believable quality about them. The cast excelled and put their heart and souls into making the characters seem real. This was one of the first comedies to tackle the highly emotive subject of divorce and at times it touched on just how heart-breaking divorce could be. First and foremost this was a sitcom though and the inevitable disasters that befell poor John made for hilarious and compulsive viewing. I can't believe it's over 20 years since this series was first shown. It's still as fresh and relevant today as it ever was. A fantastic show and one of my all-time favourites. Such a shame they can't get the rights to release it on DVD.
