Much has been made of the fact that the transition from autocratic, dandified scientist Jon Pertwee to boggle-eyed lunatic Tom Baker was a massive shock for 1970s viewers. However, it is now well known that Baker quickly made the part his own despite the fact that like any bridging story this does occasionally jar. However, it is still very much UNIT era Doctor Who and is definitely a lot of fun. You have to see this - but I recommend that you get it on DVD rather than VHS as the picture is better and there are some great extras.

"Robot" is among my favourite Doctor Who episodes of all time. Below I explain why:

1) "Robot" is an extraordinary showcase of Tom Baker's Doctor's personality and talents. Apart from the expected erratic behaviour during the first 10 minutes, the new Doctor's personality is well-cemented, vivid, witty, and devilishly clever. In fact, the new Doctor carries the story as well as anyone else involved in the story, especially because his clever trickery and scientific know-how in dealing with the robot help to progress the story in the first instance.

2) The story itself is thematically staple sci-fi which could only have been made more interesting by the unique talents of Terrance Dicks, Tom Baker et al. Whilst the theme of a robot servile to megalomaniacs and with programming conflicts became fairly standard by the 1970s, it somehow becomes fresh within the context of Doctor Who. After all, you have the Doctor, UNIT, and Sarah Jane Smith hot on the robot's trail in their own unique ways, the efforts of which weave a creative sci-fi tapestry of a story.

3) The moments of humour in the story fit better within the context of the story than one might expect. From the Brigadier's commentary to the Doctor's recital of nursery rhymes (among other forms of his humour), the humour in fact adds to the uniqueness of the story.

So there you have it. Tom Baker is my favourite Doctor from TOS, and "Robot" is a shining example of why.

Tom Baker's first Dr Who story is the tale of the titular robot, a secret creation which has been reprogrammed by a power-mad group called Think Tank who intend to take control of the world's nuclear weapons.

This story is best remembered for its blue-screen effects (which admittedly look pretty silly these days). It's maybe not as good a first story as Jon Pertwee's 'Spearhead from Space', but it's still a highly entertaining adventure. I thought the appropriately icy Miss Winters was scarier than the quite sympathetic robot (maybe because I've seen characters like her in real life), and the story has a nice tribute to RKO's King Kong (there's even a scene at the beginning where a bolt holding two doors shut gets snapped in half).
