4.0 out of 5 stars Absolute Genius. But somethings missing...., 19 Nov 2003
By Pete Shaw (Scotland) - See all my reviews
I got the single, I got the album (elephant) and the single turned out to be a whole lot better. Mainly because the seven nation army is so unique compared to the rest of their recent music. With a good pulse on bass, great rhythm on the drums and twised lyrics makes my perfect song and at just short of 4 minutes it makes decent time for its catagory. The rest of their music is so much different to this which makes the single, at the much lower "single" price, a better deal if you only like this.
And why not the glorious 5 stars? Because when I first saw it it was on a music channel where they showed the hypnotic video too, but where is it? The vid isn't on the single, the album, dvd? It's a disspointment not to see the video again.
Thats not to bring the song down though. It's a work of art and I trully hope this is remembered.

4.0 out of 5 stars The single that will make The White Stripes a household name, 11 April 2003
It starts with an infectious guitar loop that sounds like (gasp) a bass, but is actually Jack's electric lead played a few octaves lower. It unfolds with Jack snarling "I'm gonna fight 'em off, A Seven Nation Army couldn't hold me back", with Meg's metronomic drumming underpinning the menace. It is The White Stripes' first single from the incredible LP "Elephant", and it is excellent.
The lyrics to "Seven Nation Army" suggest that Jack White is delivering a controlled attack on the media - a fair assumption considering the hype that greeted the band in England during the release and tour of "White Blood Cells" in 2001. However, if this is the message of the song it hasn't frightened off the music press, who, in turn have turned The White Stripes into this year's darlings of 'New Rock and Roll'.
Whatever the message and whatever the reaction to it, this is good ol' fashion rock and roll played with such ostensible simplicity that it oozes accomplishment. Tap your feet to that swaggering hook and bask in the shrill of Jack's delivery. "Seven Nation Army" heralds the start of The White Stripes revolution.

5.0 out of 5 stars White Chills, 6 Jun 2003
Quite simply, it doesn’t get any better than this. You will have obviously heard the sinister genius that is ‘Seven nation army’ by now. Make sure you turn the volume up loud to really feel the haunting of the opening couple of bars and then after that place your hand under your chin to stop your jaw dropping in awe. Any one of these three songs could have been the A-side. ‘Good to me’ lasts slightly over two minutes, it’s about everything in one man’s life being good to him, but actually it’s about Jack playing some killer guitar rifts that have you jumping every which way and finally there’s Black Jack Davey (Why was this not on the album?!). Never mind ‘forsaking your husband to go with Black Jack Davey,’ you’ll find yourself wandering off, being led magically to wherever you can hear the White Stripes sound. Jack and Meg are your saviours now, just close your eyes and follow the blues.
