Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Available at the time of writing in 17 different guises, Club Football is a commendable new entry into the world of console football games that proves itself to be a good deal more than the marketing gimmick it first appears.

The principles, whichever team-branded version you opt for, are inherently the same. You take the club you've picked through a domestic season, with the clear intention of filling up some of the empty spaces in the trophy cabinet. In doing this, you can use the game's player generator to put yourself into the midst of this team, and then it's down to action.

And the action is good. Backed by strong in-game graphics, Club Football offers an enjoyable rendition of the beautiful game, which endears itself to a healthy, long term challenge. There are a couple of quibbles that temper things a little. The fluidity of the gameplay, for instance, is sometimes hampered by an over-insistence on a good animation instead of a quick pass for example, and there are other mild issues that slightly break up the flow of things.

Yet considering the healthy state of the competition, with both FIFA 2004 and Pro Evolution Soccer 3 putting in strong performances, it's to the credit of Club Football that it does enough to make it well worth considering. As it stands, it's not the best title of its ilk on the market, but it's a good, promising debut. --Simon Brew

Manufacturer's Description

Codemasters have put together a range of different Club Football games, each centred on one of Europe's top teams. UK club editions include Arsenal, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Leeds United, Liverpool FC, Manchester United and Rangers. The Club Football development team has been busy digitally building some of Europe's greatest football landmarks: the home stadium of each team. In the game, matches will be played in an exact replica of each club's stadium, recreated using architectural detail and photographic reference.

Playing a game will be just like experiencing the genuine match day atmosphere in the ground--with you as part of the team. During a home match, you and your team will walk out onto the hallowed turf through the players' tunnel. The stadium, packed with supporters in the teams' colours, will fill with the sound of chants, songs and crowd atmospherics taken from real match days, specific to each club. Ten different in-game camera views, in addition to replay cameras, will relay the on-pitch action in televisual style.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Must For Any Villain..., 21 Oct 2003

Codemasters are onto a bit of a winner with their new series of Club Football games, tapping a previously unthought idea of bringing out a series of games for each club because they know we will go out and buy a game which is made especially for team. They could have made a bodge-job of it, confirming that our hard-earned cash was all they were after but once you've played the game you realise this just simply isn't true.
If you have an Xbox or PS2, buy it. Its that simple. It doesn't beat the likes of FIFA 2004 or PES3, but then again its not meant to, its not in the same class as these titles which have been built upon for years (hence the one star knocked off) but for Codemasters first effort its excellent.
The crowd is the best I've seen in a game yet, and no matter which two teams are playing, the stadium is packed out in fans wearing the kits of the clubs - and depending on home or away, the correct number of fans to boot! I've never been so scared playing Wolves away in a stadium packed to the rafters in orange!
The gameplay is fun and by playing a full season the full realism of the game really shows... Playing the Premiership season even includes a cup integrated into the fixtures, featuring the lower league clubs such as Gillingham and Norwich as well.
For me the best bit is that the ball is "free" - it rebounds of anything (even making superbly realistic sounds when it strikes the advertising hoardings). It allows you to score virtually any goal possible, and the goalkeepers react to this. If ever there's been a game where its been possible to score from a deflection off Robbie Savage's behind in the last minute against Birmingham, this is the game to do it.
If I have one or two gripes its that maybe the goalkeepers are just too good, and thats just on 'easy'. But, once you've learnt the special skills for the strikers allowing you to chip, slide the ball along the ground, dip volley..I'm sure you'll find it a bit more realistic. The tackling also is something you really have to master. I haven't finished a game yet with 11 men, but then again when I think how many cards are given out in the Premiership each game it does put it into perspective. I guess you just have to think "professional performance" and not just tap the slide tackle button whenever their player is on the ball.
You can even make put yourself in the team by characterising yourself down to the lowest detail - even chin profile and width! It doesn't take long to make yourself into a Holte End legend either... I had only played three games when I'd given away a penalty, scored a blinder from 35 yards and been sent off for an atrocious challenge on Stern John.
If you're finding it hard to score from inside the box, just let fly from 20 yards or so. You can score some absolute peaches. Crossing is nice, easy and accurate too. There isn't a much better sight than Juan Pablo's late run into the box and textbook "David Platt-esque" downward header to make the onion bag ripple.
I can't fit anymore in so just go and buy it. If you don't like it at first - give it a chance, its strangely addictive. Just remember when you're glued to it that its not the real thing... I'm ten games into my season and Villa have won every away game but only picked up one point at home! That'll be the day!

And yes John Dyer I did come from behind to draw with Leicester City with just 8 men. Pretty realistic I feel!
