Deep Space Nine's sixth series began ambitiously with a six-part story arc devoted to the Dominion War. This was a brave move in many ways, but a sensible one too. Whereas other SF shows wouldn't commit to showing the impact of war (Babylon 5), here there were numerous visible sacrifices. Characters were frequently kidnapped and held prisoner, allowing screen time for other members of the ever-growing cast (at its peak there were as many as 18 individuals with speaking roles per episode). This year also introduced the idea of Starfleet Intelligence and its sinister Section 31; alliances were built only to crumble almost immediately; Sisko led a suicide mission and at long last his destiny as the Emissary took a serious turn.

Amid all this sturm und drang the writers felt it necessary to inject some levity. In fact, there was so much comedic sidetracking this year it actually seemed sometimes as if they were afraid of the series’ dark tone. Witness: Quark undergoing a temporary sex change, leading a Magnificent Seven-style band of Ferengi (with a cameo from Iggy Pop), Morn's non-speaking character being sorely missed, the blend of Troi and Guinan into 60's crooner Vic Fontaine and, in one fan favourite episode ("Far Beyond the Stars"), Sisko having visions of himself and the crew as 1950s staff writers on pulp magazine Incredible Tales. There were also cute reconciliations amongst Worf's extended family (leading to Trek's first cast wedding), and even the revelation of Bashir's genetically enhanced origins quickly became a subject for easy jokes.

Any of these events would have been satisfactorily cute if the war had ended and the show had moved on. But confusing the viewer, every so often the battle would be rejoined mid-episode. The clinching proof that no grand design was really at work was in the sudden and brutal dispatch of Dax. Actress Terry Farrell gave sufficient forewarning of having had enough of the show, but specifically asked not to be killed off. Despite all the jarring humour scattered about after the strong opening, the show seemed unable to avoid reverting to shock tactics for its finale. All of which hardly made the promised final year seem a particularly enticing prospect. --Paul Tonks

Opening with six back-to-back Dominion episodes, the story follows on from the events of the fifth series where the Dominion are now in control of Deep Space Nine. I considered this to be a very bold move by the writers as it revisited the tension between the Bajorans and Cardassians that began to fade after the second series. But it wasn't just the big battles/missions that made these episodes special. There were also plenty of intimate character scenes between the people on DS9. Those opening six episodes were a cut above the rest of the programme. The dialogue was sharper, the episodes were more tightly plotted, and the cast gave good performances all the way through. The episode 'Sacrifice of Angels' also features a fleet battle that is shot and executed with a great amount of skill. True, future episodes contain fleet battles that are much longer, but I feel that none of them have been choreographed as well as the battle in 'Sacrifice of Angels.' Other reviews can tell you what the rest of the series was like, but I just wanted to review these opening six episodes as I rank them among the best in the entire program. This really is a terrific example of what DS9 is all about, and I strongly recommend it to fans everywhere.  Comment | Permalink | Was this review helpful to you? Where many fans see this as its biggest fault, I see this as its best point. The writers and actors werent shy to writing provocative, emotive stories. The dominion war shook up the stories and gave the a sense of trepidation and suspense. Crewmen died (including one of the regulars at the end of the series!)and the captain was susceptible to underhand means to bring the war round to his advantage. Particularly interesting and the best point of ds9 was that you got to see the war from the dominion side. Characters such as weyoun and ducat really added to the shows engrossing nature. Many die hard trek fans argue that "its not living up to gene roddenberrys vision of a peaceful universe." To be honest, id rather watch exciting tv than a show where people wandered round being nice to each other all the time. The very nature of ds9 is probably why it was watched by a variety of people and won so many awards. usual trek it might not be; exciting it certainly is and well worth the price tag.  Comment | Permalink | Was this review helpful to you? Following on from a year where everything began to go wrong the season begins three months after the station was abandonned. Seeing most of the cast now directly involved in the newly declared war. Whilst Kira, Odo, Jake and Quark remain aboard the station, no under Dominion rule. Through a six parter we follow the cast's exploits off the station before there is a dramatic attempt to retake Deep Space Nine and seal off the wormhole. Later hilights include Worf and Dax's wedding in episode seven, Sisko struggling with his conscience to bring the Romulans in on the war and perhaps the greatest Trek episode ever 'Far Beyond The Stars' which sees Sisko living the life of a black writer in 1950's America. On a lighter note there are also the numerous adventure episodes including 'One Little Ship' which sees several members of the crew shrunk in the middle of the Defiant being boarded. However all of this is swept aside as the series serves up the most bleak season finale ever. After struggling with madness after the death of his daughter Gul Dukat returns possessed by the spirit of a Pa'Wraith Bajor's anti-gods, he kills Dax and destroys one of the mystical orb things, cutting Bajor off from the Prophets and leaving Sisko with a crisis of faith.  Comment | Permalink | Was this review helpful to you?
