Amazon.co.uk Review
The Canon Powershot A70 digital camera is a replacement for the popular PowerShot A40, offering scope for more creative digital photography with 10x zoom, a 3.2 megapixel CCD and optional manual controls. The main improvement is an increased selection of what the company calls "creative" modes. What this means is manual operation of the aperture or shutter speed of the camera. The unit also retains auto setting, which provides traditional point and shoot.

A little smaller in all dimensions than its predecessor, the A70 uses a 3x Canon zoom lens with a further 3.2x digital zoom and offers macro shooting down to a reasonable 50 mm. The zoom level control is a little, self-centring collar around the shutter release which can be fiddly to use. The shutter button is positioned forward on the right-hand grip, which is designed to hide compartments for the four AA batteries. Rechargeables can be used, but are not included.

As well as the mode selector wheel on the camera's top surface, which includes specialist settings for movement and night photography, the main controls on its back are simple and well laid out. There's a mode switch for recording and replaying images and a diamond of buttons for working through the camera's menu system. Four buttons underneath its small LCD display complete the set. The LCD itself is surrounded by a silver fascia, which can be distracting.

The PowerShot A70 supports direct connection to Canon's own CP-100 card photo printer as well as to some of its inkjet printers. This can speed up the printing process, as you don't have to rely on dabbling with software on your PC. Photos from the A70 show good colour balance and are not over-sharpened. Canon's new DIGIC colour processor is claimed to improve overall picture quality and processing speed. This is a good camera for those wanting a step-up from entry level 1 megapixel digital cameras. --Simon Williams

Product Description
The Canon PowerShot A70 is a versatile digital camera featuring a high quality 3.2 megapixel CCD and 3x optical zoom lens. Improved shooting modes on this camera bring the "A" series cameras more in line with the "S" series at a very affordable price. These new additions to the shooting modes allow you to expand your knowledge of photography without having to worry about upgrading your camera at a later date.

The camera's CCD enables it to capture still images as large as 2048 x 1536 pixels and movies as large as 640 x 480 pixels. The A70 features a compact and retractable 35-105mm (35mm equivalent) 3x optical zoom lens. The lens features a maximum aperture of f2.8 (wide angle) to f4.8 (telephoto). This is complemented by a smooth digital zoom (10 x combined with optical zoom). The PowerShot A70 has 12 shooting modes (Image and Creative Zones have been added). These can be selected from a mode dial on the top of the camera, which now includes all the main PowerShot shooting modes that are featured on the higher range "S" and "G" series cameras. It also incorporates the new DIGIC processor for even better colour reproduction and iSAPS, which stands for "intelligent Scene Analysis based on Photographic Space" and relates to image rendition for the creation of a natural-looking scenes or colours as seen by the photographer.

The A70 uses advanced lens technology. An iris-type aperture enables multi-stop iris control and elegant blur. The camera employs a six-blade iris aperture, allowing the aperture to be set in intervals of one-third of a stop. Also, because the aperture is almost perfectly circular, beautiful soft-focus effects can be achieved. The A70 also supports PTP (picture transfer protocol). This allows driverless image communications with computers when combined with recent operating systems (Windows XP or Mac OS). A computer using these systems will automatically select the correct drivers for the camera. On older operating systems a driver will have to be installed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent camera!, 30 Jun 2003
By Norberto Amaral (Aveiro, Portugal) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
I've been a photography enthusiast for nearly ten years, own an APS camera and a top of the range (really top of the range) SLR camera. So, now that I was looking for a digital camera although I didn't want to spend a lot of money it definitely couldn't be any piece of garbage today's manufacturers throw out at us...

Here are some of the reasons for why I bought the A70. Note that I only found some after buying it:
1. Image quality is excellent, razor-sharp!
2. Menus are very intuitive and extremely easy to use - hardly any need to read the manual
3. Many programs for all kinds of situations
4. It's possible to stitch up several pics in one - for example to build a panorama picture
5. Like SLRs it's got manual, aperture-priority and shutter-priority programs, giving you plenty of choice and control
6. At its widest the lens is equivalent to a 38mm in 35 mm cameras (one of the digital cameras with the widest lenses on the market). Believe me, this matters if, like me, you like taking pictures of landscapes, buildings, etc.
7. 3 Megapixels is enough for 99% of you out there (if you're looking for a 5MP camera then you're either a pro or nuts :-)
8. Video clips with sound
9. You can customize the camera to give it your personal touch - meaning that you can change the startup image, system sounds, etc.
10. Extremely good software - though it didn't install correctly at first, see below how I solved it
11. Very powerful flash: I suspect the range is a lot longer than the manual says
12. TV out means you can show your pics on your TV. The cable is supplied
13. After you take a picture you can inpect it by actually zooming into it. That way you can check the quality of the image
14. Compact Flash is, by far, the cheapest memory support on the market. And there is a lot to choose from, unlike other - arhem - types that are proprietary
15. Best value for money here doesn't mean it's a cheap camera and that you get what you pay for: here you pay little and get a lot of camera back!

On the downside there are a few nags too. Since if you're reading this it's likely that you're interested in buying the camera I might as well tell you the bad things too:
1. It's very heavy, meaning that although it's good for avoinding camera shake it is a bit uncomfortable on your hand. (Mind you, my other "real" camera is an SLR that typically weighs more than 2Kgs and I still wear it around my neck!!!)
2. By far the ugliest digital camera on the market. Oh Canon, can't you afford a decent designer??? I know, I know, that shouldn't matter but we all know it does! Why can't these guys make something smaller and cuter???
3. Batteries don't need a separate charger. You might as well order one and rechargeable AA batteries when you buy this camera. On the plus side the batteries are standard so when they've given their last drop you can get them anywhere from the Great Wall of China to Iraklion.
4. You only get a warning that the barrery must be replaced at the last moment. The first time I had to change batteries the camera refused to close the lens and gave me an "E18" error. What? Anyway, always carry spares with you!
5. I don't believe the manual when it says that the camera can focus down to 2 inches (5 cm) in the macro setting. I couldn't, and I made sure I zoomed out the lens to its widest
6. I had some problems installing the software from the CD. During the installation there was an error message saying that the data1.cab file could not be read... Anyway, I copied the installation directory to the PC's hard drive and had to install the components one by one. Have a look at the manual to know their names, it's easy if you know how

All in all, I'm quite happy with this camera and would happily recommend it. I only don't give it five stars because I'm a very demanding guy, especially when it comes to photography...

5.0 out of 5 stars Top Class camera, 24 Mar 2003
Having used the Powershot a40, I was very enthusiastic about trying the a70. The improved macro focusing at wide angle was a welcome addition, as was the custom white balance support. Out of the box, you get great point and shoot support. The fully automatic mode handled white balance, and auto flashed in a variety of conditions, and works very nicely. The P mode provides a little extra support, giving you exposure compensation, and vivid/neutral photo effects, as well as specifying the iso (50-400), or auto iso, and white balance selection. For the more experienced/adventurous photographer, we have shutter, aperture priority modes (both new over the a40), and full manual mode giving you support for exposures up to 15secs and control ofer flash output. At 50 iso, you get virtually no noise, and very usable images at 400iso in well lit conditions. The menu has been considerably improved, as has the body design (smaller, lighter and easy to hold on to). High capacity NiMH are a must, although it is usable with alkalines (though expensive in the long run). The 16mb card will not get you far either, but 128mb cf's are cheap, and can store about 75 full res shots. The new movie modes are welcome too. 3 minutes with sound at 320x240, plus a new 640x480 (30sec) for extra high detail. These movies are a little large (30sec 640x480, almost 20mb), but its very nice to be able to have this as an option. The only point the a40 has over the a70, was the zoom method. Though the a70's is easy enough and is only like it is to save space (keeping it a very compact camera) the zoom was a little counterintuitive. In short, I cannot think of another camera in this price bracket that gives you anywhere near this level of control. At the moment I would say you can't beat it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best 3mp digital compact for the money?, 30 Oct 2003
By A Customer
Canon brought out the A70 retailing for nearly £300 at first, so I took a look at one and was very impressed. Then Amazon started selling it for way below £250, and now it must be the best digicam for the money in the UK today. As I'm a photographer, I'm always asked "what camera should I get", so I've recommended it to a number of friends, who've bought from Amazon, and are really happy with the A70(phew!). Canon are really on a roll with their digital cameras, from the A70 right up to the EOS-1d, I think few other makers can match the all round spec' and quality of this compact digicam. Some say it's a bit big, I say it's a good size for a firm hold, like wise the weight makes it easier to hold steady. And the weight is due to the 4 AA batteries, which are the easiest size to buy anywhere - a digital camera with no power is pretty useless really!
If you're looking for a top quality, but cheap, compact digicam, look no further, I reckon.
