4.0 out of 5 stars Yes, he wrote five symphonies, 1 May 2009
What's this I hear, the FIVE symphonies of Saint-Saens? Surely he only wrote three? Actually no, he wrote a further two that were neither performed nor published in his lifetime. Martinon and Orchestre National de l'ORTF (France's equivalent of the BBC Symphony Orchestra) can be expected to understand Saint-Saens in the way we would expect Boult and the London Philharmonic to understand Elgar or Vaughan Williams. And of course, they don't disappoint in this respect. My only problem is that they didn't give the Organ symphony quite the "oomph" I like. Another reviewer compared this reading unfavourably with Levine and the Berlin Philharmonic, and I have to concur with that view. But Levine recorded his Berlin reading digitally in the 1980s whilst Martinon's recording dates back to the previous decade and is analogue (well, it would have to be in the middle 70s, digital recording wasn't developed until about 1981)

The Parisian sound seems slightly strained, but maybe that's a characteristic of the symphonies. Apart from the Organ Symphony, Saint-Saens is as poorly served as a symphonist in the recording studio as he is in the concert hall. This is a pity for there are some delightful melodies and - as is to be expected with Saint-Saens - they are clothed in consummate orchestrations.

In conclusion, good rather than brilliant readings, but perhaps the digital transfer from the original analogue tapes could have been imbued with more clarity. Still, if you want a set of the COMPLETE Saint-Saens symphonies, EMI have you over a barrel so to speak, it's this or nothing. Not a perfect recording, but neither is it a total disaster.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not to everyone's stylistic taste, 23 Jan 2008
By Barton Keyes "barton keyes" (England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
While the price may be a bargain, the content is somewhat less so, since the 5 symphonies are squeezed on to 2 discs. It's perhaps for this reason that the reproduction sounds 'thin'.

Martinon takes the ORTF through most of these pieces at a very stately pace so that much of the drama of -- particularly -- the Organ symphony is lost in a rather soupy sentimentalism. It may be the correct interpretation (it's a by a French orchestra and conductor after all) but it's probably a bit too measured for ears accustomed to the full-blown effects of say the BPO on Deutsche Grammophon conducted by Levine
