5.0 out of 5 stars Ah, the Alfredo Perl Beethoven set., 27 Nov 2008

I acquired these as nine seperate volumes (I don't have his Diabellis) some years back and they are my baseline Beethoven piano sonatas. I am assuming they are the same recordings but he might have re-recorded them. Certainly the recordings I have are crisp, intelligent and played with great flair and zest. Even if he does take them a bit fast, pretty fast actually, they have allowed me to get to know the works at a very affordable price. I have alternate recordings of the sonatas I think are most important. So, for instance, I have four different Hammerklaviers (five if you count two different Brendels). The slowest is the Gilels which is so monumental that you feel turned to stone at the end and have to spend a while remembering how to move again. Perl's is the fastest and I tend to get to the end of that ready for a brisk jog. Both, in fact all, versions have their place, and I wouldn't say either are superior.

One day I'll get round to buying another complete Beethoven piano sonatas, just to get another angle on them. My Richter Diabellis is my favourite of several so perhaps it could be the Richter. On the other hand I've seen Paul Lewis do the later ones and been blown away, so maybe I'll get his. In the meantime I'm very satisfied with the Perl. He brings an indefinable integrity to each sonata so that it feels somehow tight and integrated, and leaves one very satisfied.

4.0 out of 5 stars Invigorating piano playing from Alfredo Perl. , 25 Sep 2006

All the sonatas and the Diabelli Variations at under a hundred pounds. Good stuff. I started with the twofer from Arte Nova called Great Piano Sonatas. Now I've moved on to the complete set and am progressing through them in chronological order. So far: nothing but pleasure.

These are clearly and spaciously recorded performances from the Chilean virtuoso, who plays with energy, expertise and freshness. My only gripe is that Oehms have provided very limited notes on these masterpieces in their booklet and also that tracklists are in fact only provided on the discs themselves, with no guidance as to what tempos are indicated for each movement. Still, if you fancy trying someone who isn't super famous or from a bygone age, look no further.
