Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
An old-fashioned omnibus spooker, Bangkok Haunted is framed by scenes in which three young, apparently modern Thai women sit in a deserted cafe on a rainy night and tell each other their own ghost stories. "Legend of the Drum" is closest in style to traditional Far Eastern horror, with an antique dealer troubled by a drum that seems to invoke the spirit of a girl who disappeared 80 years ago after befriending and then rejecting a hooded, disfigured outcast. "Black Magic Woman" is a more lurid tale in video nasty style, about a girl who uses an extract of corpses as an aphrodisiac perfume with unpleasant consequences for her lovers--who have spells of vomiting, demon possession or become psychotic ghosts. Oxide Pang, director of The Eye, takes over from Pisuth Praesaengaim for the final episode, "Revenge", about a cop investigating the death-by-hanging of a young woman with whom he was involved and learning nasty things in the process. Though each 45-minute story is a tad overextended, the film is full of genuinely creepy moments, ranging from delicate ghost scares to splatter gruel. --Kim Newman

Synopsis
Three stories featuring the supernatural. The first tale tells of an antiques dealer who has haunted dreams about an object in her possession. The second tale tells of a young woman who uses a mysterious scent to attract a man, but discovers too late it's real purpose. In the third tale an apparent suicide is investigated by a female cop who discovers a shocking truth... Thai dialogue.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not very good at all, 26 Jan 2004

I thought this might be interesting due to the current crop of quality Asian horror and the involvement of one of the Pang brothers (makers of the infinitely superior The Eye), I was severely let down.

It plays more like 3 episodes of Dramarama (if you remember that) or Goosebumps to the younger generation.

If you're tempted to spend your money on this don't, it's that bad.

Whoever wrote the blurb on the back of the box needs to rewatch the film -- (s)he got several details wrong.

The film launches straight into the first story. The story is split into what's happening now (with an antique dealer receiving an old drum) and flash backs to 1917. The flashbacks tell you a traditional love story. I feel mixed about this story -- I learnt a lot about Thai culture (both modern and traditional) but it was just too slow.

The second story is set in modern Bangkok. The heroine is unlucky in love and her neighbour wakes her up with bedroom antics. Things change when she is introduced to "ply essence" but the thing about black magic is that it does have consequences of it's own. I liked the change of pace. The thing I didn't like was that it hinted too strongly what the consequences were so it was more a case of "when is such-and-such" going to happen?"

The third story is, by far, my favourite. The story follows a policeman as he investigates an apparant suicide. His chief tells him that there's nothing to investigate but he's convinced that it's murder. A mysterious whispy like thing appears and directs him to clues. There are one or two twists but I won't give them away.

The additional features were great (especially the text on the history of the genre). The "making of" documentary I didn't watch to completion though. It's from Thai television and concentrated, heavily, on how the directors interpreted the stories.

Three tales of ghostly revenge and possession told by three young women, Bangkok Haunted is an Asian version of "Tales of the Crypt" which if you consider the track record of Asian horror isn't a bad idea. Unfortunately this film has none of the suspense or slow burning terror of "Ring", "Dark Water" or "The Eye". Pallid girls wearing white contact lenses and staring into camera do not make an effective horror film.
The first story is a confusing mess involving a haunted drum of all things. The spirits aims are never clear and the ending is weak and unsatisfactory.
Story two is the best of the three and sees a young woman using an elixir to seduce men which then condemns them to an untimely death. It's an interesting premise and considering the relative weakness of the other instalments it might have been better to flesh this story out and make it a film on its own. Be warned there is copious vomiting in this episode.
Story three is plain dull, like a poor episode of the "X Files" and the minor twist at the films conclusion is pointless and mystifying. This is a poor movie. It's too long given its weak scripts and it's not scary....not once. The only thing that haunts me is the time I wasted watching it.
