Still not as good as the NOW series, but much improvement, 21 Mar 2003
This is probably the strongest collection from the "Hits" series so far, a big improvement from Hits 54, which contained many non-entities.We kick off with the big American divas, the hugely successful "Beautiful" before the quality takes a wee bit of a nosedive with Gareth's recent appalling version of "Spirit In The Sky", which ends up ineviatbly on the album. However it does bounce back with great feel-good dance tracks from Dannii Minogue, Jurgen Vriess and Love Inc. spliced by the all conquering Avril and the powerful, stunning vocals from Will and Delta Goodrem. CD1 finishes oddly, all sorts of genres of music ending the last five tracks, mainly hits from last year, but including the exquisite "Songbird" by Oasis and feel-good anthems from DJ Sammy and Darius. CD2 has more of an r+b flavour with a good start with Mis-Teeq's strongest hit to date, "Scandalous". This CD generally has a more urban feel but does make the odd slip-up every so often (putting Blazin' Squad in the same breath as Alicia Keys ought to be punishable by the lopping off of the ears of whoever did that) and mysteriously placing those spectactularly annoying twins from Transylvania next to the Streets. However, pop fans, don't skip all the indie music, you will find the gem that is "Scorpio Rising" by Death In Vegas, a beautiful track that deserved more airplay, its chart position not reflecting the quality. CD2, bizarrely, ends with last year's summer anthem "A Little Less Conversation", surely that should have been on Hits 53 guys? All in all, this is th best collection of the year so far, and the artists who have been omitted (Girls Aloud, David Sneddon, t.A.T.u., Sinead Quinn, Ainslie, Mel C, Blue, Jay Z, OTV, Eminem, Justin Timberlake, 50 Cent) will probably feature on Now 54, so if you buy both, you're bound to get all the biggest music of the last four months or so. Bargain.
