4.0 out of 5 stars Lesser Finzi but worth hearing, 25 Mar 2009
By Tancredi (Manchester) - See all my reviews
Gerald Finzi is a curious composer, his best songs usually settings of Hardy are amongst the best of British song, these Hardy cycles exhibit a wider range of emotion than anything else he produced, other works can sound very similar even somewhat earnest.

After Finzi died his executors published his unpublished songs and some were grouped together as Opus 13a/b. They include songs from his twenties and the last song he composed. There is very little stylistic difference but they are a mixed bunch, some worthy of the great cycles, some rather ordinary.

The cd is completed by songs from Finzi's friends, the best are by Gurney, indeed the Gurney songs are as good or better than the Finzi. The songs by Milford Farrar and Gill are interesting but show the difference even at this level between talent and minor genius.

Stephen Roberts and Ian Partridge both sing well, although one or two songs dont suit Partridge and he sounds a little stretched.

Overall this can be recommended at this price but the companion cds of the great Finzi cycles are a must
