Gottschalk was the father of American pianism, and this is a great, bargain-priced introduction to his music. Crisply and stylisihly played, and nicely recorded. Another Naxos success!

(REAL NAME)   
Gottschalk is a very underated composer, and in some respects his style is similar to Rifkin who we all know from The Entertainer. (Theme music from The Sting) It varies from slow and serious to light and lively, the variation on the Star Spangled Banner etc being very clever. For some different piano music that can become very haunting this is a must.

A first-class selection of works by this composer, superbly performed by the Philippines pianist Cecile Licad, whose technique to my mind surpasses that of Philip Martin in his first recording for Hyperion of some of these works - good as that was.
