Ellen Allien is a Berlin-based DJ. Her mix CD "Flieg Mit Ellen Allien" is a well-chosen blend of electroclash, leftfield pop & techno. But this album is something different - a real atist album with a unique sound, courtesy - in part - of producers SmashTV. Vocals are robotized, but it's not the standard "crap-singer-correction-device-gone-too-far" treatment made infamous by Cher. The beats show an understanding of Warp-style IDM, but they're not geeky - they shake booty bigtime (think LFO rather than Autechre). There's even some electric guitar in there, cut up in a Mirwais-Madonna style, although the effect is closer in feeling to the sampled guitars on Nine Inch Nails albums. It feels like the album "American Life" shold have been - hard, modern, digital, clipped yes... but with plenty of atmosphere & mystery too! Highly recommended.
