Handel's La Resurrezione (The Resurrection) was one of his first oratorios, but there are plenty of indications that the then (1708) 23-year-old could be expected to produce many great works. He had already written one Italian oratorio, Il Trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno (The Triumph of Time and Truth) the previous year, both for Rome, but all his subsequent works in the genre would be in the language of his adopted country from 1712 onwards.

This recording was made from a live concert in the Netherlands, and everything about it is a delight. The tempi are beautifully judged and the soloists really get their teeth into their performances. Whilst Jan Willem de Vriend doesn't have the superstar status of his compatriot Ton Koopman, he is nonetheless a fine exponent of Baroque music. For a live recording, this is full and clean with a rich bass line and a brightly lit upper register.

It has everything to recommend it. Whilst I have not always been a great devotee of live concert recordings this one has done much to show me that, in the right circumstances, there is a great deal to be said in their favour.

Very strongly recommended.
