Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Bebel Gilberto, daughter of Bossa Nova originator Joao Gilberto, delivered her long-awaited debut LP, Tanto Tempo, back in 2001. It was a genuinely beautiful album, full of delicately crafted songs, that paid dues to the traditional Bossa style while at the same time pulling them gently into the 21st century with subtle experimentation and electronic flourishes. Now, Crammed have come up with the clever idea of reissuing the LP alongside a set of remixes by a range of electronic luminaries, who translate Bebel's songs for the dancefloor massive. The likes of Phillipe soul survivor King Britt, Brazilian drum & base dons Marky and Patife, UK innovators 4 Hero, Mancunian beatmongers Rae and Christian and the ever-delightful Faze Action all turn in considered and largely faithful reworkings of Bebel's music, adding plenty of rhythmic fuel, extra walls of sound and enough club vibes to breathe new life into the originals. --Paul Sullivan

4.0 out of 5 stars Gilding the Lily!, 9 Jun 2003
By C. Athauda (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The four stars are for the original album, not for the remix CD.

Bebel’s voice is gorgeous, especially when singing in Portuguese, and the original music can be sublime, uplifting and beautiful.

The same cannot be said for the remixes. The only track that’s worthwhile here is the Peter Kruder mix of ‘Tanto Tempo’ which adds a few well placed ‘bleeps’ that would make Royksopp proud.

The rest just seem to contain a layer or two of appropriate sound relevant to the musical genre occupied by the particular ‘Remixer’.

Things are made worse by the inclusion of two remixes each of the two weakest tracks in the original album – ‘So Nice’ and ‘Close Your Eyes’ – these are toe-curlingly naff.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Game of Two Halves!!, 11 Nov 2004
I bought the original album on cd about 4 years ago. I bought it after hearing Bebel sing 'Samba e Amor' on 'Later With Jools Holland.' Rarely do I buy albums on the basis of one song but it was one of my most treasured albums...Until a friend lost it. That caused me to replace it, this time with the double cd edition with the remixes. For me, the original set of songs still shines through. Every song has something that, in time will grow on you,(if you don't appreciate it initially) though when Bebel sings in English, I feel some of that passion is lost. Having said that, 'August Day Song' is still a little gem and 'Close Your Eyes' gets the booty shaking. As far as the remixes go, the Buffalo bunch version of 'Close Your Eyes' could satisfy funky house lovers and 4hero make an amirable version of 'Samba de Bencao' that deep house listeners will like. But the rest either don't make much difference to the original or are so far removed that you are left scratching your head. At least with those 'removed' remixes, there is originality that dares to take the relevant song in another direction. I have given the special remix edition a four because, for those that appreciate the warmth and depth that music can bring, the original collection of songs really do touch the soul (for me at least). But I held back on the extra one point because the remixes, in general, don't offer that special ingredient.

3.0 out of 5 stars Should you believe the hype?
There is so much hype surrounding this album that the music gets pushed behind journalistic praise. So here's the way I see it.
