Depending on your age and the style of trumpet that you want to learn, I would advise against this DVD. I haven't started to play the trumpet yet, I've bought one and awaiting delivery. I bought a book called Jazz Method For Trumpet by John O'Neill and Steve Waterman (no relation whatsoever to the DVD, I'm just using this as an example). The book is very good for the beginner and tells you most of what you'll need to know to start with. Having scoured the pages of this book for the past couple of weeks, this DVD pales by comparison, and actually goes some way to teaching bad habits (?). For example, I've been reading how you should direct the trumpet at a 90 degree angle from the lips and to keep the trumpet straight (ie. valves facing upwards, straight on). This DVD firstly says to point the trumpet slightly downwards from the lips and also to tilt the trumpet to the right, with the valves pointing off-centre, to aid a more relaxed stance. Whether this makes much difference, I don't know, but I trust the book I'm reading more! Probably because the authors have credentials. The approach of the man on the DVD is very patronising. ('Open the case on a flat surface... make sure the handle is down'). I think even children would find the same. The tunes are uninspiring, I can't pinpoint the style... it's not like jazz, it's not like classical, it's... non-descript. I rented this DVD and thought I'd be hanging on to it for a while but I watched it very quickly and it's now ready to go back. The one star I've given it is for the little bit of information towards the end on clearing water out of the water key, although probably self-explanatory, I wasn't sure what this was for. It also shows how to oil valves (though not as thoroughly as I've read) and that's where the maintenance ends, there's nothing on greasing the slides or pull-throughs or whether or not to wash the instrument, etc. I'm glad I have the option to return this, I'd be feeling cheated out of money if I'd bought this.
