Although Kabalevsky has been much derided as a poor cousin of Prokofiev and Shostakovich, he wrote much music which is utterly delightful and extremly captivating to the ear. Although the Colas Breugnon Overture is relatively well represented in the catalogue (think of a Soviet Candide-style overture which runs witha fizz and a pop!), the piano concertos have been neglected. Kathryn Stott and Vassily Sinaisky have set the world to right with this sumptious recording which should do a great deal to raise Kabalevsky's reputation. The second concerto is quite grand in the early Soviet style with enough ghostly echoes of Shostakovich in the central movement; the third concerto (dedicated to Soviet Youth, like the Violin and second Cello concerto) is very vivacious and harmonically vibrant, reminding one of Shostakovich's second concerto but with enough thematic originality of its own. The Comedians Suite is real riot. Do try this disc - many hours of enjoyment guaranteed.
