Amazon.co.uk Review
Take one listen to the soaring summer harmonies and meaty power-pop production on Electric Version and the New Pornographers' country of origin becomes obvious. Canada has never been shy of wearing its love for the Beach Boys and Cheap Trick on its sleeve and the second album from alt. country star Neko Case's Vancouver supergroup-of-sorts contains exactly the sort of contagious, chunky pop melodies you'd expect. Songs like "Chump Change" and "Miss Teen Wordpower" fizz and crackle with catchy "ba-ba-ba" choruses, Case coming across like a Suzi Quatro in waiting, bouncy and irresistible like fellow Matador stars Guided by Voices. Super-charged like the Go-Go's, sexy like early Pretenders, this is a real treat. --Everett True

CD Description
With alt-country chanteuse Neko Case periodically joining forces with members of Zumpano and Destroyer, the New Pornographers ply their trade as a sort of indie-rock supergroup. Their sophomore album ELECTRIC VERSION finds the sextet, (septet if you count secret member Dan Bejar), roaming the sunnyslopes of power-popdom using chiming harmonies, cheesy keyboards, and punchy guitars as their guideposts. Jittery synths and hooting background vocals make "Chump Change" very Redd Kross-like, power chords and a thumping beat transform "The Laws Have Changed" into a perfect surf-driven new wave song, and the stunning coda in "Testament to Youth in Verse" rings with the beauty of early era Bee Gees. Like fellow Canadians Sloan, this Vancouver-based outfit also has a knack forpumping out guitar-driven Cheap Trick-like pop, and on thiscollection of songs, the apex is the relentlessly swaggering "It's Only Divine Right". With ELECTRIC VERSION, The New Pornographers once again prove themselves plugged into the mechanics of perfectly rendered power pop.

4.0 out of 5 stars Testament to Youth in Verse!, 4 Jun 2003
The second album from the Canadian pop-punk outfit.
If you're at all familiar with their first album 'Mass Romantic' then you can expect a similar brand of punchy, catchy tracks. The band haven't really evolved since their first outing, but that really doesn't matter because the songs are so great. 'The Laws Have Changed' and 'The Electric Version' are probably the catchiest tracks on the album, boasting the same highly melodic and frenetic style that made the first album a masterpiece.

Unfortunately, Neko case (the fantastic girl singer) only sings lead on a couple of tracks but Carl Newman delivers some strong vocal performances as the bands frontman.
The band's overall sound is still very keyboard heavy and full of energetic drum fills, but there are also subtle uses of strings and saxophones if you listen out.
The lyrics sound interesting as well, its a shame they didn't print them.
Electric Version is a great pop album and deserves to be played loud.
Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Pop Album, 16 April 2005
Having stumbled across this record i didnt know what to expect, and didnt expect much. I was very pleasently surprised. My first impressions were "Wow, this is really good!".

These impressions hold true for the whole album. The chirpy pop sounds generated by these candian guys and gals is uplifting and always manages to cheer me up.

5/5 A happy, pop rock album suitible for everyone!

5.0 out of 5 stars Second album from Canadian pop geniuses..., 9 Oct 2003
By Jason Parkes "We're all Frankies'" (Worcester, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 10 REVIEWER)
2000's Mass Romantic (released in the UK in 2002) is the best pop secret this side of Magnetic Fields'69 Love Songs...really, YOU ARE NOT WORTHY! The opening track on that album is probably alone, the best pop single ever made ever (in the history of the universe, ever)- sort of Suzi Quatro meets The Smiths after listening to Beauty & The Beat and a Cheap Trick-compilation. I wasn't expecting a follow-up so quickly- the various members (Blaine Thurier,Carl Newman,Dan Bejar,John Collins, Kurt Dahle & the gorgeous siren/vixen type Neko Case) all have careers elsewhere in North America (Note-Case's last 2 1/2 releases have been a sublime dark take on country & rank as high as anything released in the last century or so...).

The New Pornographers pull on past forms of music- Brian Wilson, Van Dyke Parks,Todd Rundgren, Cheap Trick, The Go Gos, Blondie,Sparks,70s Aerosmith&Kiss,New Wave etc- in an inventive manner- having more in common with Wondermints, Apples in Stereo, Stephen Merritt, late period St Etienne, spin-off bands like Golden Smog & The Minus 5 & Ultra Vivid Scene. A whole lot more inventive than the lazyarsed retro displayed by The Storks, Darkness, Kings of Leon and whoever else has a moustauche/is being hyped by the NME as the cure for Nirvana this week...

Sadly Case features more in a backing vocal mode- though the rest of the singers aquit themselves wonderfully; it is fair to say that EV is not as great as Mass Romantic (yet...) It's more of the same, slightly expanded- which is fine by me! Chump Change has a wonderful melodica, great strings & "Ooh/Ooh" backing vocals. All For Swinging You Around is the one at the moment, an ideal track for a jukebox in heaven, Neko Case comes to the fore on this blissed out take on Knack-territory- if this track doesn't fill you with giddy euphoria and make you want to move to pop heaven straight away- YOU ARE DEAD. Listening to a track like this, you wonder why this lot aren't the biggest band in the world (then again, people like me are secretly happy that such secrets are for a select few...)

The opening title track has not dissimilar drums to that of Bandages by fellow/more popular Canadians Hot Hot Heat, I'm assuming the new wave was big in Canada! I still have hope/time for pop songs- not most of the crap that gets in the chart (though many Neptunes/Timbaland/Kylie-related fayre does it for me!)- but those tight, wonderfully constructed things that make you feel like you're living in a moment, sounding like the past and future at the same time in a succinct present. From Blown Speakers has a great lead vocal from Carl (I think...) with great keyboards and the sublime Ms Case on backing vocals...

This whole album is another pop treat, from the Adam&the Ants/Glitter Band feel of New Face of Zero & One, to the sideways Stranglersisms of It's Only Divine Right to the lovely closing track Miss Teen Wordpower. Electric Version does expand on Mass Romantic, the production is much more complex and comes out the more you listen to it. OK, Neko only sings lead vocals on one track, but the harmonic vocals go far beyond that debut album. This is the album that should be playing in the perfect bar, its euphoric qualities akin to the joys of hedonism. Can't wait for the next album- fingers crossed it's the double album that will make them global superstars (or something...)
