3.0 out of 5 stars looking back at the future, 14 May 2003
dylan's born again christianism, many fans thought, was a thing of the past. the original releases of these songs in the 80s aren't among his best albums, due to uninspired production (saved, shot of love) or too much preaching (slow train)
here is a second helping of the same material. if you didn't like the original, some of these interpretations can help you over, but it is a very uneven performance by some of gospel's greatest artists. it sounds more like a compilation album;
dylan's own and single contribution - a live recording from 2002-is jammed by a silly post-recording dubbed conversation with mavis staples.
I like the album and the whole idea of having these songs performed by gospelartists, but it could have been done better.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pressing on., 13 Nov 2006
Some might think this an oddity about an oddity. An attempt to turn Dylan's evangelical Christian phase into standard Gospel music. Yet it works splendidly. I think the main objection to to Dylan's evangelical phase was the turn to simple lyrics and the abandonment of his complex ambiguous style. Yet simplicity works too and given this treatment, we can see just how well it works. The version of Pressing on by the Chicago Mass Choir might not convert anyone to Christianity, evangelical or otherwise, but it will inspire.
