Many are aware of French Viole music through the film Tous les Matins du Monde, an entirely fictional account of a dour, reclusive Sainte-Colombe le pere and a portly Marin Marais. Sainte-Colombe senior actually found time to beget an illegitimate son, Sainte-Colombe le fils whose works are featured on this recording. The stigma of being born out of wedlock and the persecution of Protestants in France meant that le fils spent much of his life in Edinburgh and the manuscript of these works is to be found just over the Border in Durham, England.
The 6 suites are scored for bass viole alone like the earlier works of DeMachy and can be realised on the English six-string variety. The suites consist of a prelude followed by a series of dance movements (in name only). The exception is the sixth, which includes the Tombeau pour Sainte-Colombe le pere, a character piece of some thirteen minutes, here accompanied by the odd interjection by a narrator in gruff French, which doesn't detract from the music at all and only adds to the haunting quality of this tribute. Solo viole music is often reminiscent of solitude, quiet contemplation and the ghosts of the past. Sombre and often sad, this is late night music to listen to alone.
The advantage of this edition is that it includes a bonus disc. This consists of two suites taken from Marin Marais's second book. As is more usual, here the viole is accompanied by a continuo group (harpsichord, second viole, baroque guitar and theorbo). These pieces have been visited before but are well presented here with first rate continuo support.
Jordi Savall has been the leading bass viole player for a while now and this three CD set is another triumph. Although there is the odd murmur from Savall and some playing noise due to the close placement of the microphone, this is a thoroughly recommended set. A 'must have' if you like 'musique pour une viole'.
