Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

There are rally games and there are rally games--and then there's Colin McRae Rally 3. It's difficult to know where to start with the third instalment of this hugely successful franchise: the eye-wateringly sharp graphics; the intuitive gameplay or the understated, superb commentary and sound.

As you'd expect from a top rally sim, everything about the vehicles can be customised, and tinkering under the hood between stages really produces a difference. If you're a bad driver you can also see the difference, as tearing the hood, side panels, or windows out mid-stage reveals an astonishing level of detail within the car. Engine parts move, suspension arms judder, and Mr McRae himself bounces around the car's cockpit in full 3-D.

With a variety of gameplay modes ranging from single races to three-season tours of duty as McRae himself, there's plenty of bang for your buck here--and by the time you've cannoned off the scenery for the umpteenth time you'll know what bangs are all about. Thankfully code masters have resisted the temptation to fill Colin McRae Rally 3 with discordant music tracks, relegating the score to intro and menu screens and leaving the in-game sound to codriver commentary and a multitude of engine sounds--a pleasant change in an age where licensed soundtracks are king. The strongest element of this game, though, is the gameplay. The car handling is dead-on and in wild weather (snow, rain and fog) guiding a speeding Ford Focus around sharp bends is a real art form. --Chris Russell

Product Description

Colin McRae Rally 3 on the PC captures the emotions and consequences of being a professional rally champion. It's an unbelievably personal gaming experience, as you become the globe's greatest rally driver, Colin McRae himself.

Colin McRae Rally 3 makes a massive leap in terms of playability, motor sport detail, rich visuals and the perfect rally-car handling the series is renowned for. Above all, it delivers a game that captures every drop of sweat, the 150 decisions a minute and the teamwork that goes into being Colin McRae, who spent three years with Ford Rallye Sport.

The main championship game is a gruelling series of races across eight international rallies: Japan, Spain, USA, Sweden, Finland, Greece, Australia and the UK are all included and offer tarmac, gravel, dirt and rain-soaked road surfaces.

The championship game puts players through a three-year deal. Like the professionals, you'll compete in the full year and drive in every rally. Fall foul on a stage or damage the Focus beyond immediate repair and you'll be retired from that particular rally without the all-important championship points. The driving seat beckons at the beginning of the next rally, but points will have to be made up to stand a chance of becoming a champion.

4.0 out of 5 stars Colin McCrash Part 3? Or part 2.5?, 10 Sep 2003
I recently bought this title despite the other reviews. I agree that the lack-lustre multi-player support is a disappointment... Expecially after playing CMR2 so much on our network. But Colin McRae 3 doesn't appear to be a replacement for CMR2. Merely an addendum. The graphics are not only prettier, but faster on my machine. The single player game is brilliant. Codemasters stated a long time ago that the intention was to drive as Colin himself. So it makes sense that you drive in his car. Admittedly, it's be nice to do a championship in the RS200, or the Mitsubishi Pajero, or even the tank.
The force feedback is identical to CMR2, so you should know it's spot on. There is a patch to fix some force feedback issues and speed up the game, so I recommend you download that if you're having problems.
I think that this is possibly the best single player rally simulator yet... It's polished, playable and very realistically made.
The only bad thing, besides the multiplayer, is the pace notes. Occasionally there're whole corners missing from them. Despite how hard Nicky Grist must have worked to 'research, write and voice' the pace notes, They're not too good. But once you start to learn the stages yourself, You can let that little problem slide.

Not any better than CMR2, but no worse. If you don't have CMR2, Buy that first. Then buy this, I doubt you'll be disappointed... Just remember, You really ought to own both.

4.0 out of 5 stars CMR 3, good rally physics, but lacks cars 'n' stages., 26 Dec 2003

(REAL NAME)
If you are a hardcore racing / rally simulation fan with a good force feedback wheel set up then CMR 3 is impressive.
However the game lacks in areas the second game had like doing a full championship in other cars, as you can only use the Ford Focus.
CMR 3 has good driving physics and graphics, but still lacks in the damage area and game content, basically a full championship mode should have approx 14 - 16 rounds, with 18 stages over three days per rally. But CMR 3 lacks this comitment of proper simulation conditions.
As a Marcus Gronholm fan I was disaponted not to see a Peugeot 206 WRC in the car selection.
I can't wait for CMR 04 on the PC as I know it has better selection of cars and championship modes.

In breif CMR 3 is very good in the drivng side but needs more game volume to improve as I completed all three championship years as Colin in the Focus WRC in a couple of weeks then could only drive other cars on single stages.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than version 2., 25 Jun 2003
I will be totally honest with this game, It has been improved over the later version, and that’s why I give it an overall 4 as I gave V2 a 3.

Good and bad points.
The first thing you notice, is the graphics, they are much better, snow, rain, sun flare, thunder, smoke, mist, dust.. all very well done. The roads and landscape is much improved also, and at moments you think its real.

Handling, I use a wheel naturally, and I get a funny feeling while driving this game, like the physics are cheating some what, which is a shame as this reminds you that it’s a game, when you could very easily get caught up in it, and have the adrenaline pumping.. but saying that, the drive is still fun, and exiting.

I have completed the game on easy level already, few hours, very easy to complete this game, don’t be thinking this is a multiplayer online game, when it says it’s a multiplayer, because its not, it has no network play at all. Those like my self who used V2, would have expected this to be there, but sadly they have not included it, you can only play on one pc, multiplayer i.e. split screen or take turns, who dose that these days ?

Also if after you completed the game, and want to continue to play it against Computer drivers, this sadly dose not appear to be there ether, like in V2 you could race against 5 or so computer AI cars.. so would make up for the missing online option!

Overall I feel this game has done well in parts and gone backwards in others, it might be as a result of being released on console first, then put together to work on pc, instead of the other way around as it used to be. So coding online play and extra things that would not be on a console, don’t seem to be worth it these days, this is not just this game, it’s a growing trend unfortunately.

So overall, for the drive this game is worth it, you get a good thrill, its fast and its overall better than its predecessor, but its not worth its price. So you decide!
