Product Description

Product Description

In tactical strategy game Aliens vs Predator: Extinction, players will control the forces of one of three species--Alien, Predator or Human Marine--planning their attack strategy, creating their own custom army and choosing upgrades ranging from vision modes to weapon modifications. Each species offers a unique set of attributes forcing players to master a variety of tactics and play styles in order to be victorious. As Colonial Marines, players will rely on military training and the latest hi-tech weaponry from the Weyland-Yutani Corporation to save the human population of LV-742. The Predators must use their stealth and highly evolved hunting techniques to gain the respect of the council of Ancients. Aliens will attack in hordes to kill their enemies and impregnate them with facehuggers, which evolve into the ultimate weapons. A variety of units will be accessible to the player, from basic infantry to specialised warriors like the Alien Carrier able to carry facehuggers in groups, the Predator Hydra or the Marine Sniper.

5.0 out of 5 stars It may be Extinction, but console RTS is reborn!, 15 Aug 2003
By A Customer
Now, normally I believe that developers should make games for a system depending on what genre the game they're making is. For example, console Racing games are far superior to PC, and FPS are much more of a PC based genre - much like Real Time Strategy. There is nothing more difficult than playing a strategy game without the aid of your trusty mouse and keyboard, as console gamepads just don't cut the mustard. I believe, however, that Aliens vs. Predator: Extinction is one example where this is not the case. The incredibly simple control system is gently drip fed to you through a series of excellent tutorials, each making the game a whole lot easier to play. Although not a very deep game (there is practically no story at all), it is incredibly addictive action, with single missions able to extend well over half an hour without becoming repetitive. The three sides in the game are very well balanced, with no clear advantage to any one given side. Whether playing as the gun toting Colonial Marines, stealthy Predators, or hordes of Aliens, the game never gives an advantage to one side (although I sometimes wonder about the Alien Facehuggers). Although this may not appeal to a person who has never seen one of the Alien or Predator films, it is still a great action romp and the amount of gameplay available is well worth the money. Anyone who has seen the Alien and Predator films will love this game, as the attention to detail is spectacular. The shimmering cloak of the Predators is incredibly like the films, and the chatter of the Marine pulse rifle and smartgun is duplicated to perfection. The models used in the game also move like they do in the films, whether it be the rapid, crawling movements of the Runners or the slow stamping Exosuit, it all feels incredibly real. At some points it does feel like you're in the film. Many of the levels are a good challenge, even the earlier ones, and all are possible to complete using a variety of different tactics and units.
Overall, I believe that anyone who has even a remote likeness for the Alien or Predator should have a copy of this game. Buy it, borrow it, hell even steal it - it doesn't matter so long as you play this game!

4.0 out of 5 stars Review- Aliens vs Predator: Extinction (PS2), 22 Aug 2003
People have been divided for a long time on the subject of Aliens vs Predator in general (good franchise or bad), and although I am a great fan of games in the series, I am genuinely telling you the truth when I say this is the defining RTS that money can buy.

I'll admit that all the signs were there, I mean who ever heard of Zono? Why was there little coverage of the game in magazines? Why was it released before it could be reviewed? To be honest, I didn't think it would be that great game, but it has defied all expectations and proved many people wrong, including myself.

The graphics are excellent, the animation is superb and the landscapes look great. It's true there is some slowdown, but only when there are many troops on screen, virtually the maximum infact and there aren't amounts which make it unplayable. The gameplay itself is truly awesome. You get three species, the humans, the aliens and the predators, all with different abilities and style of play. This is one of the most unique aspects of the game. When everybody says that the styles are unique, no-one believes them. We have seen Command and Conquer. Allies/Soviets, slight variations, but humans/aliens/predators, incredible amounts of difference. It is amazing, the way each species has a different way of creating units, the way each species fights and how each species manages to survive. It is pure genius in the way you earn your currency, each species has a different way.

So if you want an excellent RTS, with great deals of variation in missions and teams and fully upgradable units, which gives you the opportunity to decide how to win a war, how you should essentially structure your army, if you want a well rounded, well produced game, then Aliens vs Predator: Extinction is clearly the one that you want.

Now, the bad points. There are one or two, which prevent it from getting 5/5. 1- The voices and sound effects for the narration, troops and battles are excellent, yes. However, the music needs work. At times, there is no sound- the atmosphere feels dead and this is very unfortunate. 2- The landscapes, although looking picturesque and wonderfully varied, feel quite sparse. You will often find yourself venturing around incredibly large battlefields which look lovely, but there is nothing there.

Despite these things though, it truly is packed with tonnes of nice little touches and has some very unique ideas that separates it from the crowd. The war is fun and brutal and I strongly recommend it.

All in all, the game is excellent. Fans of the films and games and even fans of strategy will rejoice.

5.0 out of 5 stars wow, alien war at it's best!, 12 Aug 2004
By Mr. J. Adam "valaquentor" (Midlands, UK) - See all my reviews

I can only say 1 bad thing about this game. THE UNITS BUNCH UP!
Nothing else is wrong with this brilliant game. The Aliens are definatly the best species the pick, followed closly by the mighty Predators, and we seem to be at the bottom of the food chain again. Ah well, nevermind, i can't complain at such a good game. I'm not selling my copy until the next Aliens vs Predator game comes out, but i'll only let go of it, if the next 1 is better than this one, which i doubt. It deserves 10/10, no mistaking!!
