A real gem, 24 July 2003
JVC have managed to cram so much into this slimline player, it's incredible. The picture is incredibly sharp - even using a cheap scart lead. Scart lead not included. The reason I bought it was because of its ability to play different types of discs - I recently purchased a philips dvdr70 recorder, and needed another player which was compatible with DVD+RW discs. Although the box does not mention it being compatible with +RW, it did mention -RW, and after checking JVC's own product spec web page, I took the chance - and my luck held out. I use Infiniti brand DVD+RW discs, and this jvc plays them back without a hitch - I am confident that it could playback any brand of discs. The remote is easy to use, and the system is jam packed with features - some of which you can only get to if you use the menu bar. The AtoB repeat feature is hidden behind one of the menu options. There is a very handy x1.8 zoom which is excellent. Some players start their zoom level at x4 which means that you get an extremely pixelly grainy result. 1.8 zoom during playback means that you can zoom into an area of the screen and still watch footage to a decent level of quality. Some players only offer zoom on a still freeze-frame - by this unit will zoom during video playback. Another neat feature is that you can pan around with the zoom on, so that you are not resticted to zooming the centre of the screen. This zoom works great for removing the black bars on letterbox widescreen movies. This unit also plays back jpeg images - I stuck in a CDR disc with contained some jpeg pictures - all different sizes, and in different directories on the disc. Within the blink of an eye the player offered an easy to use on-screen menu which allowed me to view the images individually from different folders or grouped. The quality of the jpegs is breathtaking - wait 'til you try. There was no need to convert the images in any way. You can even zoom & pan into these images. The VFP (very fine picture - i think) button on the remote lets you fine tune the picture by adjusting the brightness, gamma level etc Player had variable bi-directional slow motion speeds as well as different scan speeds for forward and reverse. This players is multiregion. I have only had the player for one day, but already am delighted with my new gadget. Negative points The disc tray looks a bit wobbly and feeble - so i wouldn't go pressing on it when feeding a disk. I guess that's the price you pay if you want to make something as slim as the n33. Contrary to belief and a few websites this player does NOT have optical out - its got coax digital out, but it does not have the little square socket for connecting to some home cinema surround sound systems - you have been warned. This caught me out. Too many leads spoils the picture. In the box there's a bright orange card which warns you NOT to attach too many video leads at the same time, otherwise the picture gets distorted. I have currently attached a scart to the single scart socket, and also used the svideo socket - both are currently providing a clear picture simultaneously (touch wood!)
