5.0 out of 5 stars Catherine Cookson, 14 Feb 2004
By A Customer
I have always enjoyed reading books by Catherine Cookson. She is one of my favourite authors, so I was incredibly surprised when televised versions of her books came out. I have always wanted the movies on video, or DVD, but I have never seen any on sale, except when they are individually priced. I was pleasantly surprised when I found this 23 disk set at an incredibly low price of £79.99! I think it is great value for money, considering the content you will recieve as well as the hours of entertainment you will, no doubt, be able to endure!

5.0 out of 5 stars PERIOD DRAMA AT ITS BEST, 7 Feb 2004
ANY FAN OF CATERINE COOKSONS WORK WILL HAVE HOURS OF ENTERTAINMENT AT THEIR FINGERTIPS.THIS IS A WONDERFUL COLLECTION OF TELEVISION DRAMA FEATURING MANY WELL-KNOWN FACES ON THEIR RISE TO STARDOM.ANY OWNER OF THIS SET WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED AS EACH DISC IS PACKED WITH HIGH EMOTIONS AND FINE ACTING-NOT TO MENTION THE EXCELLENT COSTUMERY.SUCH FINE ATTENTION TO DETAIL ALMOST PLACES THE VIEWER INSIDE THE ONGOING DRAMA,A FINE TRIBUTE TO THE CELEBRATED AUTHOR.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ignoring the turkeys, 9 Jan 2009
The Catherine Cookson Collection (23 Disc Boxset)

Hours of really good undemanding entertainment. Watch once for the story and once for the costumes and settings, shelve it for a year and then watch again.

Be warned - the Mallen discs are real turkeys. Clumsy, thigh slapping, embarrassingly farcical rubbish. Some of the actors are good in other work and capable of much better so I suppose it must be down to absolutely crass direction. Until I saw these I had no idea why film buffs consider the director so important - a real education.

I have since read that Catherine Cookson was so horrified at the Mallen series (1979) that she refused to allow any more films to be made of her books. Fortunately she was persuaded to reconsider (1990+) and the later discs are really good.
