Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
A futuristic horror/sci-fi game geared towards anime fans, Galerians: Ash places you in a weird future where a sentient computer with delusions of godhood genetically engineers and manipulates humans with telekinetic abilities. The premise and storyline blatantly--and effectively--mimic The Matrix and Dark City (and even Johnny Mnemonic); the graphics, sound and style fall somewhere between Akira and Silent Hill.

To those unfamiliar with the original Galerians, this game will make little sense, and unfortunately the frequent cut scenes do little to clarify the storyline. In a nutshell: you are a boy endowed with psychic powers and your brain contains a program that can save humanity from the computer-god. Unfortunately, you suffer from amnesia. And frequent migraine attacks. Or something like that.

For the most part, you make your way through the labyrinthine city, solving elaborate puzzles and collecting pharmaceuticals that enable your telekinetic powers. When the baddies appear, you can use a variety of attacks to repel them: conjure fire, levitate your adversaries, throw up a psychic shield and so on. However, if you overuse your abilities, you begin to "short"--a crippling psychic overdose that leaves you invulnerable to outside attack but slowly kills you if you can't find the necessary antidote.

Since you battle enemies by manipulating your psychic powers, the game's controls are not exactly intuitive, and the comparative potency and range of your various abilities takes a lot of figuring out. But if you're bored of games that rely on guns, swords or jujitsu, this one offers some unique and inspired twists on first-person combat. Meanwhile, the creepy graphics and grating sound effects create an atmosphere that will either draw you in, or drive you mad. --Maile Bohlmann

"Different and very unsettling... if you're into Manga-esque narratives, you're gonna love it."

4.0 out of 5 stars Well, I like it..., 20 Dec 2003
It really depends who you talk to on whther this game is good or not. I personally loved it. Sure, it was a bit slow and awkward in places, but if you want a zombie action horror game, go for silent hill. Galerians has always been about shock value.

I'm a fan of the original Galerians, and was that ever shockingly gruesome. It caused an outrage when it was first released due to drug usage and finding the main guy's parents in the fridge. Very creepy.

Galerians:Ash is really a good storyteller. I mean, look at Resident Evil, that as such a patchy, unoriginal storyline; don't you people get sick of it? Galerians really makes you think. Sure, it's not action-packed, but that's what Silent Hill is for.

If you really don't wanna buy it, rent it from somewhere at least. It's a game you have to experience. Like Ice Tea. Don't knock it until you try it. It isn't as popular in the west because all western gamers care about is how much violence, edge-of-the-seat action and thrills there are. Be less picky. This game is a classic!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not worth it., 18 Aug 2003
This, frankly, is a rather terrible game. It has lacklustre puzzles, a very gappy and unnatractive dialogue, and although the story is very Neo and original, it wasn't executed well enough to appeal to the majority. From the outside it doesn't look bad, as lots of anime-based games look nice to the untrained eye, but this is something you should skip past. It's not worth it. The edgy graphics, annoying music and incredibly slow pace make this a bad game.

I'm warning you guys, trying to help you save your money. Spend this on another game, because this one is a waste.

2.0 out of 5 stars It's a no go., 18 Aug 2003
This game had a lot of promise. It was an interesting, but maybe too sci-fi idea, and probably appeals a great deal more in Japan. It covers the story of some clone/bots that are spawned from a town-governing computer who wants her errands run. From there-on, things happen including drug boosters, and interesting individiual special abilities. To be frank, this game is boring. I thought it would be great, I was very excited, but it was terrible. The graphics were scratchy, the dialogue was horrible and gappy, and the whole gameplay was excrutiatingly slow. Also, it had puzzles that are obvious, but take ages to do anyway, they were godawful.

Save your money people, i'm trying to help. Spend this on a better game, because this is just terrible.
