Odessa Steps was created when the band were asked to play an alternative soundtrack to Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin at the ICA. This piece reoccurred throughout the film in different shapes and forms....
Swollen & Sag is a mutated pop song about growing old, turning into a ghost and flying round your home town as a child.
"Building A New was made by processing stuff we had played live in the studio. That's why it still sounds melodic and organic because some of the synth lines are Jimmy playing the Hammond organ or piano, but put through a weird filter. Likewise, I wanted my guitar to sound like a mutant synth thing so I put in weird effects etc. We just played quite freely in the studio and sampled bits and stuck them together".
Horses sees the whole band in vocal harmony singing about fleeing the paddock and freely roaming the countryside alone.
Part 1,2,3 is a vigorous multi-instrumental cut and paste affair of the bands favourite tracks when playing live over the years.
Wondrous Thing is another vocal track about "pushing bad things out and taking stock of what you got". Man.
These pre-conceptions could not have been further from reality.
Imagine the Slaughtered Lamb pub-scene in 'American Werewolf In London' with a cider-fuelled, instrumental soundtrack by Fugazi, John Spencer, Goblin, Can, Dead Kennedys etc. played by a teenage pub band formerly known as The Dukes of Hazard. A bespectacled Steve Albini lookalike, called Jimmy Wright, franticly swapped guitars back and forth with drinking buddy James 'Pedro' Rutledge, and David Tyack took to the drums like a whirlwind mutation of Ginger Baker on the waltzers and Buddy Rich with Tourettes. 40 minutes later DOT had left the building. It could go one of two ways: Strongbow or Diamond White?
DOT now live in the city. As an entirely instrumental entity they have toured the country extensively, supporting the likes of ESG, Doves, Broadcast, Elbow, Add N to (X), Cornelius and, of course, Badly Drawn Boy. Collectively they have accompanied, remixed, produced, inspired, rescued and resurrected many a fellow musician. They have played gigs in cinemas, theatres, churches, pubs and breweries. They have scored for new films, they have scored for old films. As individuals they record and release albums as David Tyack, Pedro (Melodic Records), and Jimmy Wright, and are respected as leading lights in contemporary country and electronica alike. DOT defy nature with their musical cross pollination, and if Mojo were to print a DOT family tree in years to come they would run out of ink. But right now, the most important thing in the world of DOT is the (5 hectic years in the making) completion of their first ever full length LP.
