Recently he has been especially recognised as an out-standing advocate of post-Soviet composition, performing Schnittke, Arvo Pärt, and above all Silvestrov whose 'Postludium & Metamusik' he has made his own.
On 'Messe Noire', Lubimov turns his attention to Russian music of the first half of the 20th century with pieces by Stravinsky, Shostakovich, Prokofiev and Scriabin.
The building of bridges between the neoclassical objectivity of Stravinsky and Scriabin's mystical visions requires a particularly adept artistic touch. Lubimov's limpid phrasing, which often feels as much like improvisation as interpretation - as if he is reinventing the music - provides this.
'Messe Noire' is the third ECM New Series album in 2005 to take Stravinsky's music as a starting point, following Leonidas Kavakos' 'Stravinsky/Bach' collection and Dennis Russell Davies' CD of Stravinsky's orchestral music with the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra. Both discs received a chorus of critical acclaim, and a similar reception for Lubimov's recital is all but guaranteed.
Lubimov's first ECM recital, 'Der Bote', imaginatively combined elegies by composers from CPE Bach to Cage to Silvestrov in a programme that was universally praised. The New Yorker called it "tantalizing" and named it "one of the most distinctive discs of the year".
