In Thailand the film is called "Nor Chor" or "The Prisoners." For reasons known only to themselves the western distributors of this movie decided to change the title to "Bangkok Hell" and market it with the slogans "Stronger than Midnight Express" (whatever that means) and "Once they lock you in there's only one way out!" Therefore, upon seeing the western dvd cover, you may be expecting a sensationalist film full of sadistic beatings and violent gang rape!

You couldn't be more wrong!

If you want to compare this film to any western one, then compare it to The Shawshank Redemption or maybe even Cool Hand Luke. It's as good as either of these.

An absorbing film, it grabs the attention and holds it to the very end.

Highly recommended.

Having seen trailers and read promising reviews about this foreign film, I was really glad to finally get a copy. However, I've been bitterly disappointed by it. The film is appealing - life behind bars, how the wardens are really the corrupt ones etc. You've seen it all before in films such as The Shawskank Redemption (which is FAR superior).
Unfortunately this film doesn't live up to it. They've obviously just thought "ok, let's throw in every controversial aspect about prison life", such as rape, drugs etc. These issues were skated over really superficial and basically in a boring way. For example, the rape storyline with main character Ray seems like it will develop into some sort of serious and shocking part of the film because it's a pretty big issue at the start of the film. However, the storyline is just dropped. What's more, the sub-plot involving a couple of prisoners planning an escape is stupid because the characters are suddenly just slapped onto the screen without you knowing anything about them beforehand!!
Basically, the film just jumps. It has no thread. It skips from one topic to the next concerning prison life. Plus the main character is a pretty bad actor I think.
There are some good parts, some good scenes and imagery such as the explosions. I was ALMOST tempted to give 3 stars but it's just too long and uneventful, and I didn't really care what happened in the end. You've seen it before a hundred times, done better. Na, maybe rent it if there's nothing else in the shop but other than that don't bother.
