Synopsis

Famed British comedian Eric Sykes stars in his eponymous classic sit-com. The popular black and white series began in 1960 but the series burst into colour in 1972, and all 16 episodes of the first colour series are presented here. Hattie Jacques plays his twin sister with whom he shares 24 Sebastopol Terrace in East Acton. Neither are married and get into allsorts of funny domestic situations, with a good dose of pathos too when things go wrong. They are often visited by the local bobby Corky (Deryck Guyler) and features other special guest appearances from Jimmy Edwards, Peter Sellers, Joan Sims and Mr Jacques (aka John Le Mesurier).

5.0 out of 5 stars Must buy British tv comedy. Excellent., 15 Feb 2004
By A Customer
Well worth waiting nearly a year after the initial advertised release date - a lot of work has gone into this DVD set of the complete 1972 series, 16 episodes.

Network Video have done an excellent job at restoration and the images are very clean and bright. Half of the episodes have extra material added. In addition there are many outtakes.
See Peter Sellars throw Sykes over the settee! See the man who operates the bird in the clock...
One episode, not seen since 1972, exists only in black and white, but has been lovingly restored.
Classic domestic comedy by a master classic comedian. Highly recommended.

This is a truly excellent DVD package - the extras are wonderful and hugely appropriate, the picture quality and restoration superb and the whole pack was obviously put together by people with a great love of this classic series.

Treat yourself to 16 episodes of some of the best British comedy ever made.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh, Eric! Brilliant, brilliant....., 12 Jul 2005
By A. E. Marples "The Brit" (North England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
There is something wonderfully familiar about "Sykes" as a comedy series - some sort of fondness between each of the actors and the writer that could not have been faked. All the quirks and irregularities of Sykes and Hattie Jacques when they're acting... It was as if they were all a large group of friends who were just making each other laugh.

At first, I thought this might have just been my own impression, or a fluke... but after viewing the clips "In the Studio" (an interesting set of outakes/behind the scene footage), I saw that this was indeed the case. And all the better for it.

A brilliantly funny series, with cameos from lots of Eric Sykes' closest friends... Peter Sellers (hilarious) and Joan Simms (excellent) to name just a few. The production team has obviously taken it's time in restoring the series, and this process is shown on the DVD... each disc has a different feature as well as the episodes.

A perfect DVD package to accompany a perfect British TV comedy series. I highly recommend you to buy immediately.
