James Pennington of Underground Resistance fame delivers his first solo album for Peacefrog, and mighty good it is too.

It has all you have come to expect from Pennington, the rugged electronic beats of the motor city, Detroit, combined with beautiful string melodies.

The emphasis is always on the more rugged side of techno/electro, but with the strings and basslines, it combines to be anything other than harsh. Equally at home on the home stereo or on the dancefloor, this is in my top 3 Peaecfrog releases of 2003.

This album comes close to greatness on a few occasions but never delivers- string/synth lines are not classy enough, there are too many (dare I say) cheesy/ravey type stabs and sounds which detract somewhat from the solid beats and heavy bottom end. Its like Mr. Knight has built the main part of the track and then lost all inspiration for the melodic parts, the parts which will seperate it from being just another functional (but ultimately forgettable) electro track, to something that moves the listener emotionally as well as physically. Im no Detroit expert by any means, but this isn't a patch on Sean Deasons atmospheric masterpiece 'Allegory & Metaphor' or most of Aril Brikhas work. Artists like these produce music which you can't help but move to, and while you are moving you are being 'moved' by the lush synth work as well. Having said that, there are several tracks that would probably work well within a set, but listening to them at home or in my car I frequently get bored or annoyed with the lack of inventiveness and end up skipping to the next one after the first couple of minutes.

I listen to a lot of Mikrolux, Rhythm & Sound, Echochord/Deepchord, Touchin Bass, etc and was a bit disappointed with this release to be honest. Peacefrog are a good label and always worth checking out, they do however fall a little short of the mark with this particular release though. ONLY check it out if you are more interested in the beats and bass than the strings and synths!
