Synopsis

OTELLO was the traditional season opener at Teatro alla Scala, and in December of 2001 this was the farewell production before a three year renovation started. Barbara Frittoli won over crowds and critics as Desdemona, and Placido Domingo considered this production his farewell to the role of Moro di Venezi.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unforgettable "OTELLO-silver anniversary", 30 Oct 2003
Superb sets, costumes, and Placido Domingo THE BEST OTELLO always for now, 25 years later after the 7 of December 1976 which was his very first OTELLO at La Scala...Yes, unforgettable "OTELLO-silver anniversary"

It is impossible to dream for a more intense OTELLO by a tenor in the complete maturity of his Art.
Definitively, Placido Domingo has marked the role of Otello with his fantastic presence, his great look, his magnificent voice, the intensity of his singing and acting, going from the powerful "Esultate" to the tenderness of the first duet...to the infuriated tone closing the act 2...to the total rage in act 3...to finish act 4 in a total despair which is really breaking our heart in parts : he is UNIQUE !
I had been watching the Italian RAITRE when this opera was screened on 30 December 2001...and I want to point off the good luck it is now for us to see this performance to be preserved on a DVD !
Also, I have to mention the fantastic conducting by Riccardo Muti, the sweet and beautiful Desdemona by Barbara Frittoli, and the perfect Jago by Leo Nucci.
The "5 stars" rating is really the value for this production which received such an unanimously reception on the day of its premiere, the 7 December 2001 : an exceptional triumph !
