4.0 out of 5 stars Where's the dialogue, 29 Dec 2003
By A Customer
First issued in 1962 immediately following on from the 'with dialogue' recordings of PINAFORE, IOLANTHE, GONDOLIERS and PATIENCE, this recording of RUDDIGORE created quite a furore amongst G & S Fans when despite initial advertising indicating that the dialogue would be included, in the event it was absent. This was a great pity as there would certainly have been space over the four LP sides to include the dialogue. DECCA may have thought that the inclusion of the Original Overture as an entr'acte and the duet "The battle's roar" (normally cut from stage production at that time) would appease the critics, but the row rumbled on for some time. That row did however eventually result in the reinstatement on stage of the original act two finale, and the duet (although this was placed in act two).

The cast is a vintage one with John Reed and Kenneth Sandford both on top form, Mary Samson as a very sweet Rose, Thomas Round an excellent Dick Dauntless and Jean Allister guesting as Mad Margaret. Chorus and Orchestra excellent as ever under dear old Isidore Godfrey.

4.0 out of 5 stars To set the record straight, 26 Jul 2005
By A Customer
A review from a music lover from London accuses John Reed of being "camp" in this recording - but what does this reviewer expect? The G & S patter roles are inevitably "camp" and Mr Reed is just playing the role as Gilbert conceived it. Only King Gama in PRINCESS IDA might be considered an exception. This is a superb recording marred only by the absence of the dialogue which DECCA originally intimated would be included, but which, in the event, was missing, causing much expression of dissfaction amongst the G & S faithful of 1962. It is, however, a hallmark recording from the silver age of the late D'Oyly Carte and as such can be highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Modified rapture -, 27 Mar 2005
By A Customer
This has excellent conducting by Godfrey and the best orchestral playing (Royal opera orchestra) of any set available. John Reed is a bit of a camp Robin Oakapple but is otherwise fine. What a tradegy there was no dialogue though. For those of us who love this operetta we deserve a decent full dialogue recording.

This production also retains the heavily edited Act 2 that 1920's Doyle Carte management thought was an improvement on Sir Arthur Sullivan and William Schwenk Gilbert's original work.

3.0 out of 5 stars The so-so 1960s version
No, John Reed was not camp. He lacked the talent to aspire so high. He was no more than a clown, and a pretty limited one at that. Read more
