X-Men 2: Wolverine's Revenge (PS2)

Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

You've read the comic, you've seen the film--now be the mutant! X-Men 2: Wolverine's Revenge puts you in the adamantium-spiked shoes of the X-Men’s meanest hero.

While comics are having a bit of renaissance in films lately, with several decent versions of four-colour heroes making it to the big screen, the only half-decent superhero game is still Spider-Man. Wolverine's Revenge should change all that with what promises to be a genuinely worthwhile game in its own right. Tying in only loosely to the new X-men movie, this is basically a Wolverine simulator which traces his life from his first appearance as Weapon X in 1968 to a series of deadly battles in the modern day against the likes of Lady Deathstrike and Sabretooth.

As you'd expect, the emphasis of the action in the game is on 3-D combat and this works extremely well, with various combos to unlock and the ability to fight multiple bad guys at once. More interesting though is the way you can use Wolvie's animal senses to follow scent particles in the air, hear distant sounds and track an enemy's heat signature. This aspect of the game works incredibly well and allows you to play the game as either an all-out actioner or a more tactical, stealth-based affair.

It's unusual to see a comic character portrayed so accurately in a game, with all their powers intact, but Wolverine's Revenge really pulls it off and combines it with some great gameplay and cool graphics. --David Jenkins

4.0 out of 5 stars SNIKT!, 1 May 2003
Get ready for the finest Marvel adventure to date on your PS2! This is the game that all you true believers have been waiting for - a chance to play everyone's favourite adimantium laced, cigar chomping, slicing and dicing mutant Wolverine in his very own game - 'X-Men2, Wolverines revenge'.

Do not let the title worry you. This is not some shamelessly dissappointing movie tie in (Spiderman the movie?) but an origional X-Men adventure.

The story goes that during the operation to insert his adamantium claws and skeleton at the hands of the nefarious department H, the Weapon x programmes also installed a failsafe in all of their subjects - the deadly Shiva virus. Switch to present day and Wolverines virus has just become full-blown active and he has but 48 hours to find a cure or die!

Wolverines adventures take him to several well known locations in the X-Men universe. The opening level provides a prequal as you recreate Wolverines escape from Weapon X many years ago. Other locations include 'the void' maximum security mutant prison and 'return to department H.

Wolverines list of enemies is also impressive and includes his arch nemesis Sabretooth, Wendigo, Juggernaut, Magneto and Lady Deathstrike. Each enemy has a unique way in which they can be defeated which is not always obvious at first.

Graphically the game is brilliant, it doesnt attempt the 'realistic' graphics of other movie tie ins but rather adopts a 'cartoon' feel that looks straight out of the comic book. The sound is also spot on. Voice acting for Wolverine is provided by Mark Hammil of StarWars fame and he is suprisingly excellent in this role. The musical score is atmospheric and sound effects include all of those you would expect as well as a satisfying 'snikt' each time you pop your claws!

The game includes several 'must have' aspects of wolverines character including his healing factor, unbreakable bones which allow you to fall from any height without injury as well as the ability to combat enemies with or without your adamantium claws. Perhaps most pleasing however are wolverines 'senses'. Pressing the L1 button will activate these senses and Wolverines world will change to one where he can see thermal footprints on the floor, vapour trails, infrared beams and tripwires, camera beams and other traps. These senses can be used along with a 'stealth' mode which allows Wolverine to navigate his environment and dispatch his enemies undetected, a pleasing addition that reminds us what an effective killer the character is.

Throughout the game Wolverine will collect dog tags which allow the player to unlock hidden concept art, alternate costumes and character profiles all of which can be viewed from the main menu. There is also a jukebox and movie viewer availible.

This game has very few weak points, however camera angles can on occasion ruin gameplay and some levels are so criminally hard that they will have you hurling the joypad down in frustration. Do not let this disuade you though as 'Wolverines Revenge' is a brilliant, challanging, visually pleasing game which is a pleasure to play and is guaranteed to keep you occupied for a long while.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stealth and mutant kung fu., 11 Jun 2003
The action begins with Wolverine breaking free of captivity in a top secret laboratory and leads him into a fight for his life where he must successfully find an antidote to prevent his death. The gameplay is slick and the graphics great. A range of special moves that develop as your skills improve and the added special features mean that the game does have an extended lifespan. A good, if slightly complicated storyline for non-comic/x-men enthusiasts but the action and fighting makes up for this. Add the fact that you can perform stealth attacks and use your mutant senses to sniff out tracks and you have got an action-packed adventure game that requires some level of thinking and not just pure power and brawn.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wolverine ROCKS! Nuff said..., 26 May 2003
The story is simple, Wolverine has been infected with a virus by the people who turned him into a killer in the first place. He has 48 hours to track down a cure or he's going to be one dead mutant. The game starts with a prologue featuring Wolverine's escape from Department H, and keeps getting more action packed from there. By the end, you will have faced many of Wolverine's major foes and had a great time doing so. Great graphics and gameplay, X-Men 2 Wolverine's Revenge should be clawing its way up the charts. AWESOME!
