Amazon.co.uk Review
The adventures of pint-sized secret agents Juni and Carmen Cortes (Daryl Sabara and Alexa Vega) continue. As Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over opens, Juni has left the spy agency and launches a career as a private detective--but when he learns that his sister Carmen has disappeared into a nefarious multi-user computer game, he agrees to go in after her, with the assistance of his grandfather (Ricardo Montalban). Three-dimensional special effects launch us into a topsy-turvy world of battling robots, souped-up motorcycle races, frogs on pogo-sticks, surfing on hot lava, and much, much more. The story is even more incoherent than an actual computer game--but the movie storms along, driven by writer/director/editor/everything-else Robert Rodriguez's sheer visual enthusiasm. It features Sylvester Stallone, Antonio Banderas, Carla Gugino, and everyone else who appeared in the first two Spy Kids movies. --Bret Fetzer

Synopsis
The SPY KIDS are back in this third installment of the popular series from Robert Rodriguez that features high-tech 3-D animation woven into the images of the film with digital technology. Juni Cortez (Daryl Sabara) is ready to quit the OSS spy Agency until the President (George Clooney, in one of the film's many celebrity cameos) warns him that the evil Toymaker (Sylvester Stallone) has taken his sister Carmen (Alexa Vega) hostage in a virtual reality videogame created to take over the minds of the young people playing it. In order to rescue Carmen and save the world from the domination of the Toymaker, Juni must journey inside of the videogame and risk his own life to beat it and the various riddles and monsters designed to challenge him. Leaving his spy parents (Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino) behind, Juni brings along his Grandfather (Ricardo Montelban) and OSS agents Cesca (Salma Hayek) and Donnagon Giggles (Mike Judge) to help him save the world. Once inside the technicolour reality Juni must conquer each level of the game while avoiding death and the ultimate videogame defeat: "game over." Rodriguez' usual brand of high-octane adventure and nonstop action is fueled by the film's 3-D animation and numerous celebrity cameos including: Steve Buscemi, Alan Cumming, Bill Paxton, and Elijah Wood.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spykids III is actually quite good - particularly in 2D, 22 Nov 2004

When I saw this at the cinema with my son (8) I didn't rate this film as much as the first two (I love the original Spy Kids). This was probably due to the 3D glasses (I have a lazy eye and it was a pain). The DVD has both the 3D and 'normal' versions of the film (VHS is normal only). Watching on TV in non-3D, it has grown on me a lot. Stallone is very good fun and all the lead/support are excellent as usual. It's more than a bit like a frantic updated version of TRON or a live action Scooby Doo & the Cyber chase (no bad thing). Well worth a look, particularly if you have pre-teen boys in the house. My son seems to watch this film more than the previous two Spy Kids, although he says 'they are all the same', i.e. equally brilliant - he rarely goes for the 3D version though unless it's with mates and popcorn. By the way if your kids like Spykids III, do try them with the DVD of Shark Boy and Lava Girl [3D] - it's not really for adults but younger preteen boys seem to love the film, and it comes with his (SharkBoy) and Hers (LavaGirl) 3D glasses.

3.0 out of 5 stars 3-D, 3 Stars, 25 Mar 2004

As a huge fan of Robert Rodriguez, I really wanted to like this film, and was like a kid myself waiting for the postman to deliver it.

When I actually watched the film I was quite disappointed. I know I am not (officially) a kid any more, but I still felt a bit let down, and its hard to say why. The packaging is great, with 4 pairs of 3-D glasses (slight problem for a 5-person family like us..) and 2 discs: one with the 3-D film and a second disc with most of the extras plus a 2-D version of the film.

The extras, as usual with RR, are varied and interesting. There is the now customary 10 minute film school which shows how much more there can be to directing than just pointing a camera, a making-of documentary, director's commentary, music footage of Alexa Vega live, and other cool stuff including a game based on the race featuerd in the film. OK, its not going to compare with a Playstation 2 game, but its entertaining enough and its also available in both 2-D and 3-D versions.

So far, so good. The package is fine, the extras are better than average, the film is action-packed with lots of neat gadgets but it really lacks a decent plot. Its the end of a trilogy, and everything is thrown into the film, but all the in-game sequences seem to be driven by what effects can be done rather than the story. Also, everyone from the other 2 films appears somewhere but only George Clooney really gets to make the most of his appearance. Blink and you will miss Danny Trejo, Steve Buscemi, Cheech Marin and Antonio Banderas. Stallone as the Toymaker does a good job with his various personas though.

The ending is pretty rushed, more than a bit trite, and came as a bit of a relief.

Having said all that, our kids enjoyed it which is the main point of the film, but with the earlier Spy Kids films I enjoyed them too. This seemed too much like a warmed-up Tron with a dash of 'pod race' to deserve the sort of rating any of Rodriguez's other films get.

This disc is worth buying for the novelty of the 3-D, and for the neat set-pieces. The film itself is only worth 2 stars, but the quality of the extras bumps it up a bit.
