Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
In Air's City Reading an ambitious challenge is met with aplomb. The project centres principally around the literary talents of Italy's Alessandro Baricco. Following on from Air's previous work this is an ambitious concept piece that consolidates their soundtrack work to date. This time the emphasis is on providing a subtle accompaniment to Baricco's dark Western tales penned through the hand of his alter-ego creation "Shatzy". Translated, the tales centre on dusty mid-western towns with accounts of twisted whore house activity, paedophilia and upright walking dogs. It's curious and ominous subject matter, understood and realised by the sparse instrumentation that JB Dunckel and Nicholas Godin understand best. Hanging synth-lines, whistling wind, acoustic guitar (perhaps a homage to the classic Alessandroni spaghetti sound) and silence allow Baricco's reading to have full effect. Those who would rather not hear some of the stark content should rest at ease: Baricco's lucid, Gainsbourg-like tones smooth the experience, although a book with a literal translation is included. This is dark yet beautiful. --Found Sounds

CD Description
'City Reading' follows the French duo's 2002 release '10,000Hz Legend' and was recorded in collaboration with Italian novelist, Alessandro Baricco. The album blurs the boundaries between spoken word and music in the way that it presents a reading of the Baricco's novel, 'City'. Nigel Godrich - famous for working with Radiohead - produced the album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sublime brilliance, 28 April 2003
By A Customer
Air seem determined not to repeat themselves. Instead of making another 'Moon Safari,' they've gone on to more challenging projects, such as writing the music for 'The Virgin Suicides.' This CD continues their soundtrack work, but this time their sublime music is used to accompany and imitate short stories and poetry provided by the Italian author Alessandro Baricco. Some people may find the readings a bit intrusive, but with some patience, the album becomes almost hypnotically sublime. Luckily, the poet has a good voice and the quality of his writing is of no real concern, as it is spoken in Italian anyway. (The sounds of the words are more important than their meanings.) Air have continued to make their music more complex and interesting. It sounds a bit like they have combined the best moments of 'Moon Safari' and the 'Virgin Suicides' and developed them, creating something that sounds unique and mesmerizing. The album also benefits from the brilliant production of Nigel Godrich. The chord changes are even more subtle and beautiful than any of their previous works. This is an essential CD for any Air fan, but the uninitiated may want to try their other albums first.

3.0 out of 5 stars Important Disclosure, 28 Mar 2003
By A Customer
Firstly, Baricco is my favourite author, the man is a genius. The abridged text that make up the sleeve notes are worth the money on their own, for people who are unfamiliar with his work. However, this raises a very important point: nowhere on the CD does it state that the spoken text on the CD is in Italian - yes, I realise that he is Italian, and the names of the 'songs' listed are in Italian, but it is misleading to have an introduction and sleeve 'notes' by Air/Baricco written in English, only for the text to be then delivered in Italian.

The CD is very pleasant to listen to and Air provide the perfect foil for the spoken text, however I would have liked to hear the text spoken in English, or at least be told that the CD is in Italian.

5.0 out of 5 stars Air are the greatest band ever.. well according to me, 14 April 2003
By I'm With The Band (Liverpool, England, Earth) - See all my reviews
I read about this release a few months back and expected it to be brilliant. And it is. I've read reviews of all Air's releases and find that some people don't like the way they have progressed since Moon Safari. I've liked everything Air have made and this album is just simple and beautiful. You can dance to it (recommend 'The Robot' and jazz-type moving about)and great when riding your bike and standing in your back garden on a sunny day. The words to describe it are a quiet "woo" and a even quieter "woah". I don't possess the knowledge of long words, such as "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" (though not actually a word) so i guess "Phantasmagoria" (look it up) is the next one down.

Air's music is harmony and melody, you could say from track 1-10 they hark back to Moon Safari days and the latter is there later music, but that's stupid. It's all one piece of music that is beautiful. Air have never changed, just progressed, built on what they have grown. This music will have you speaking gibberish which you palm off as Italian (well i do) and have you whirligig. This music had me wanting to be able to jump and move in slow-motion. This music needs to be heard.

Two thumbs up..
