Product Description
The fun and easy-to-use DSC-P72 offers an effective 3.2 megapixel image quality to produce stunning images in a diverse range of conditions. In addition, the camera includes compatibility with Memory Stick PRO, extending the data capacity to 1 GB.

Picture quality, contrast and colour rendition are all superb on the DSC-P72, and the camera produces superb high-quality prints. The 3.2 effective megapixel resolution gives printed photographs a quality that matches analogue photography (up to standard 10 x 15 cm), allowing users to zoom in closer and crop to get the shots they want. The 14 bit DXP system plus Super HAD CCD combine to produce excellent image detail, smooth contrast and stunning colour rendition. The Smart Zoom function allows users to get closer to their subjects without sacrificing image quality. The camera intelligently adjusts the ratio of zoom based on the resolution of the image, achieving up to 9.6x magnification.

Thanks to a number of improvements in flash operation, the camera intelligently makes adjustments to light conditions. An exposure warning means you always have the right exposure. The camera will detect the exposure level before taking the shot and a blink a warning if it is not enough. Slow Synchronised Flash operates at a slow shutter speed for shooting foreground objects in twilight backgrounds, giving clarity to the background as well as to the foreground. Auto Daylight Synchronised Flash automatically measures the exposure level for foreground objects that have light behind them and Flash White Balance will adjust for correct white balance in colourful shots.

The DSC-P72 offers many features that allow shots to be taken with minimum fuss. Start-up times have been reduced to just a couple of seconds while newly designed control functions mean that the camera can be operated by little more than the touch of a thumb. Burst Mode takes two shots in rapid succession, doubling the chances of acquiring those once-in-a-lifetime shots. The camera uses buffer memory to temporarily speed up data transmission between shots and is ideal for sports, action and wildlife photography.

Users can also capture far more than stills using the MPEG Movie VX function, which makes it possible to record VGA quality movies with sound. Used with Memory Stick PRO, the camera has a maximum 1 GB of memory, allowing approximately 44 minutes of movie recording.

4.0 out of 5 stars Simply Fantastic, 11 Nov 2003
- I would first like to stress that i have experience of many digital cameras as my family enjoy photography to a large extent. My father has the 5.0 Megapixel Sony camera and i have to say the shots aren't as good as the P72 - and thats for sure! My mother has a FujiFilm 1.5 Megapixel camera - it has nothing against the P72 quite obviously! My father also has a 3.2 Megapixel Olympus camera which i shall comment on later. But I would also like to stress though that i am not simply brainwashed because i bought the camera. As i have said before, i have seen many shots from different cameras, i did my research and have found the P72 to be in the top league.

- So with this in mind, i feel it necessary to tell you that this camera is fantastic! It is incredibly easy to use, the build quality is excellent and as for the picture quality, well i was amazed - rather irritatingly it even managed to catch some perspiration on my forhead with amazing clarity!

- Battery life is superb. When pitched against the battery life of the Olympus P350 (i think thats what it's called - basically the 3.2 megapixel camera in the same price region as the P72), it wins by miles.

- I cannot understand why on earth people have claimed it takes 'poor night time shots' because in my experience they are incredible! To exemplify this, i recently took a picture of a red couch in total pitch black conditions. Not only did the shot look as though it was in daylight but the image quality was second to none. Colour and cushion patterns defined with exceptional clarity.

- The reason i gave it four stars instead of five is down to the fact that, so far as i can tell, it isn't particularly good at taking motion shots. Each one of the pictures taken at a recent party, that has had people moving whilst the shot was taken, has turned out blurry and rather dissatisfying. Perhaps this may be due to my current basic knowledge of the camera's features - i may need to read the manual in a bit more depth!

However, all in all for the excellent price you pay, you get a brilliant little performer that is not just for beginners (as many of the other reviewers seem to have stated). Trust me, buy it!

The only camera that i would say is a little better on the picture quality front is the Olympus P350. However, like others have said in the Olympus reviews, it EATS batteries which brings it down a peg to equal the overall rating of P72.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great little camera packed with usefull features, 11 Nov 2003
By A Customer
I have had this camera for a few days now and have found it very easy to use, it has a multitude of functions if you choose to use them or can just be left in "auto" mode for point and shoot stuff. My only concern while choosing was that the LCD screen would be too small but having used it this is not the case and the quality of the display is far superior to previous cameras I have owned. Can't really comment on the battery life as yet but they've lasted a couple of days of tinkering so far with no probs. This is probably one of the best cameras in this price range and has a very well put together feel to it (typical of Sony) highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good buy!, 11 April 2003
By Han-Yong Teo (Singapore) - See all my reviews
I'd been looking around for a while for an inexpensive compact digital camera that can provide reasonably good quality pictures for my family photos. Immediately when the Sony Cybershot DSC-P72 became avialable here, I'd got hold of it without much hesitation. The reason being it's a good buy considering the features I get for this price, especially the 3.2 megapixel resolution, 3x optical zoom, MPEG movie with sound, and most of all its compactness.

The camera is easy to operate that I did not even need to read the user guide before starting to use the basic features.

The image quality is also excellent when using the 2048x1536 resolution with fine setting.

The use of AA battery also makes it easy to find emergency replacement in case the original two that come with the camera go flat.

Oh yes, the image/video transfer and editing software that comes along with it is really excellent! It allows all images to be transferred to my notebook computer (via USB) automatically once I connect up the cable without any intervention required (you can if you want to). It also allows me to create slide show of images and video with many professional looking transition effects easily. It also provides the conversion to Video CD format (with navigation menu) and direct writing to CDR/CDRW.

However, the 16MB memory stick that comes with it is a little too small in capacity, so I'd upgraded it to a 128 MB version. By the way, the camera also supports the new Memory Stick Pro which gives a much larger capacity (up to 1GB I think).

Overall, it is a good buy for the price I paid and I'm so far satisfied with its performance as a novice user.
