It Ain't Over , Not By A Long Shot!, 16 Jul 2003
Paul Carrack is the most underrated pop musician I have heard. He is not well known in North America. I have had to import every album.I have bought every solo album of his and this is the best since "Blue Views". The song writing is above exemplary. While the lyrics are somewhat pedestrian, the music and production simply excel. He uses wonderful hooks in a mix of ballads, 60's and 70's style R&B, contemporary rock, and jazz elements. There is not a bad track in the album, but the best has to be "Where Did I Go Wrong". Perfect use of rhythm guitars, saxophone and percussion elements will have you bopping up and down in your car. And take note, this is a great "cruisin'" CD. "Empty Space" has a wonderful reggae/R&B feel to it. What soul! "One Small Step" has a strong gospel and yet orchestral feel, for a love song. The lyrics in this song are a little shmaltzy, but still very accessible. The strings gave me goose bumps! When you go into "Forever", if you're not singing at the top of your voice, you're not human. "Never Too Late" is funky, and very danceable. The other tracks are also wonderful, but these were the highlights for me. Paul's voice and soulful singing are a treasure. I envy you luck Brits who can see him live just about anytime!
