an absolutely smashing set that, to a degree, puts to bed the theory that Vivaldi's La Stravaganza set of concertos wasn't as good as his earlier L'Estro Armonico - OK so admittedly it wasn't, but I'm not sure there's a L'Estro Armonico performance to match this new La Stravaganza for virtuosity, taste, refinement.

It's got the togetherness and sensible approach of a really good current British performer and director, with something of the elan of a good continental orchestra, with neither the over-aggressive catchiness of a Biondi nor the four-square rhythm of Hogwood or Pinnock on their vivaldian bad days.

This new recording is probably a bit better than the classic ASMF/Marriner La Stravaganza, but that's still a wonderful recording of ASMF at their absolute best. I have both of them on my shelf now, but Podger's is probably the best. This really is wonderful music.

This is undoubtedly the best recording of these works: it is something very special.

It raises them above their own quality. When I bought this set I played it again and again. I couldn't get enough of it. I still listen to it with pleasure now but sometimes I wonder whether Podger doesn't make just a little too much of these works? OK, she can't help it that she is a great violinist, and the performances are certainly supremely musical, but I do sometimes wonder whether a slighter account of these works might fit them better. Oh well, you can't have everything.

Podger is a violinist that I feel we should hear much more of than we do. I'd love to hear her in later repertoire as well as in baroque and classical. Her playing is wonderful but it is the sound she makes ... . It is instantly recognisable and it takes your breath away.

A double CD of great variety and virtuosity. Podger's playing is inspired and helps to give shape and structure to these concerti. It's an electrifying performance, fizzing with excitement and passion.
